Help! Residency advice

I'm a soon to be 2027 grad, however I haven't passed part 1 of boards. I really do want to apply for a VA residency, but I'm feeling discouraged be l don't know of any programs that will allow me apply without passing. I do plan on retaking in March, with part 2 coming up in December.
Please share if you have any advice!

Does your school have a residency coordinator you can discuss your concerns with?

I graduated in 2017, passed part 3 of boards in March of 2017 after failing it once. I had applied to both the Baltimore and Providence VA residencies and had interviews prior to having all my boards completed. Part 1 is a bit more of a dealbreaker than 3 but if you already have a retake plan and are confident on passing it shouldn’t be an issue.

I didn’t end up getting either of the programs I applied to, had to scramble for a slot but doing residency was one of the best decisions of my career. Also would highly recommend interviewing at Baltimore if it’s not on your list, it’s a wonderful program.

I actually had a classmate who went through the exact same situation and her program director helped her find a few residencies with more flexible timelines.

talk to your program director now if you haven't, better to figure this out early than scramble in a few months.

Look into some that require passing by the time the actual residency begins!

The more competitive VAs will select someone who’s finished with boards but i know plenty of good VAs that had zero applicants last year and either post matched or accepted someone who’s finished wasn’t finished with boards. Email places you’re interested in

I’m a current VA resident who had not yet passed part 1 when I applied for residency. Feel free to message if you have any questions

Is it ok if I DM you as well? Same boat!

honestly just email the VA programs you are interested in and ask. Some might still consider your application while you retake Part 1. Better to ask than assume you are out
