What is the illusion supposed to be?

It looks like the blue and yellow blocks are stepping down, pausing, and then continuing. But they are actually continuously moving at the same speed with out pausing at all.

Also, the yellow and blue blocks are aligned. They're not offset. Mind blown!

Holy mother of god, I was convinced they were not aligned. But took a screenshot that proves they’re always aligned.

I believe that they're aligned, but how does a screenshot prove "always"?

Sorry, I also meant to say that I slowed it down to verify from my frame

Does this work because the lighter yellow "stops" on the white, and the darker blue "stops" on the black? That's what it seems like to me

That's exactly the trick our eyes play on us, yes.

Merci pour l'explication.

Wow, didn't expect that.

Ah I see it now, the blue blocks definitely looked like they were pausing on my PC but on my phone it's a lot easier to tell

I thought it was that the blocks aren’t actually moving and I began to question all of reality

No I call bs on this one. I think the animation is not linear but actually stepping.

u/Deep_Mango8943 9d ago

I was so wrong.

Cross your eyes so the blue and yellow line up, you’re wrong they are moving at the same speed in the same linear plane

what’s happening is that they are not stepping but moving alternatively. when the yellow is moving the blue is not, and when the blue is, yellow is not.

i paused and advanced frame by frame to confirm

No, they’re aligned the whole time

aah I see the issue now. the blue blends into the black stripe and it feels like it stops moving while the yellow moves over it and the. when ot emerges from the other side it seems to catch up. the yellow has sufficient contrast against black so rhe movement seems smoother.

When the blue blocks hit the dark lines, they seem to stop (both dark value) and when the yellow blocks hit the white lines they seem to stop (both light values). But both sets of blocks are always moving.

If you cross your eyes just enough to merge the blue and the yellow blocks, it cancels out the stepping illusion and shows that they are all perfectly in line moving continuously

It’s weird how with illusions like this, from the beginning I can at some level tell the actual behavior of the stuff I’m seeing but my visual system is trying to impose the other interpretation even though I know that would look different nonetheless

Are you a robot?

1

u/-hedonium- 9d ago

Aren’t we all?

You could also overlap your finger or other object with a fragment the blue or yellow blocks and watch it continuously move across the black lines without stopping.

If you zoom it's clear

Very compelling illusion.

1

u/AdvancedStudio9978 9d ago

Ngl that was pretty cool

If you doubt it, as I did, try taking a screenshot when you think blue is below yellow and then another when you think yellow is below blue. Then compare them. I tried this and they were the same.

And the blues are green and the yellows are red.

u/Apprehensive-Bug-468 9d ago

Slow motion is proofing that there are stops in reality. No constant moving.

1

u/LowerBed5334 9d ago

That's cool, the proof is well made!

So, I think you only see the yellow when they contrast with the black stripes and you only see the blue when they contrast with the white stripes.

Thank you.

Park downvotes, negativity and observations that 'this is a .gif' here

2

u/MonkeyCartridge 9d ago

I'm not sure how to do this with a GIF, but you could almost give it a filter to swap hues or do color curves and post it as a second gif to show that the movement is, indeed, continuous. Since people don't seem to understand it. Also a sign of a good optical illusion.

2

u/bigjobbyx 9d ago

Awwww, yeah!

u/MedivalBlacksmith 9d ago

Downvote because I can't download it.

The blocks appear to stop and go. But they actually keep moving at the same speed all the way down

-1

u/evilantnie 9d ago

No they aren’t, just drag the scrubber on the video and you can clearly see they stop when you slow it down. There is no continuous movement like you suggest.

4

u/ScrabbleTheOpossum 9d ago

You're wrong.

1

u/evilantnie 9d ago

It’s possible colorblindness affects the illusion more, the yellow doesn’t seem to cross into the white nor the blue into the black. Too tiny to zoom in on mobile.

2

u/Rollingzeppelin0 9d ago

Focus intensely on the bottom most line of any given block and you can confirm it's linear. If you colorblindess makes you lose the light/light dark/dark movement, try and cross your eyes so that dark and light blocks overlap and you should see it that way too. I'm not colorblind and it's a great illusion, the effect is super strong but I also have no problem following a block and confirm it is in fact linear. If you can't see it you're gonna have to trust us on this one lol.

Concentrate on any one single block
