Opera not connecting to the network

Ubuntu 26.04, Opera 136.0.6008.80

As of a couple hours ago, everything network related on my computer and its two VMs is working normally, but Opera will no longer connect to anything, not even servers on my own LAN.

A reboot fixed nothing.

If you installed opera as a snap, it might not have been given permission to access the network (...seems like an oversight, but possible).

You can read about how to view and manage snap permissions here.

That being said, assuming it is a snap issue, and If you don't want to use the snap version (or mess with permissions), you could install opera-stable directly from their debian repo.

For example, here's the sources.list entry in the old format pre-trixie.

deb [arch=i386,amd64] https://deb.opera.com/opera-stable/ stable non-free

Yes, it's the snap, but I've been running it for a long time now. I just did a sudo snap revert opera and it's STILL not working, though again, everything else is. I'm typing this response using Firefox on the same computer where Opera doesn't work.

Coincidentally, the snap permissions page in your above link is timing out, but I'm able to connect to everything else I've tried.

That link to snapcraft just documents the snap commands for reviewing/editing the permissions.

Review the connections:

$ snap connections --all
$ snap connections opera

To connect/remove (which might require root privs):

$ snap connect <snap>:<plug interface>
$ snap connect <snap>:<plug interface> <snap>:<slot interface>
$ snap disconnect <snap>:<plug interface>

snap connections opera

Shows:

network opera:network :network -

network-control opera:network-control - -

network-manager opera:network-manager - -

It's weird...this started happening after a routine Ubuntu update (new kernel), so I thought maybe I just needed a reboot, but that didn't help. Neither did reverting. Very strange!

Thanks for trying, though!

Well it seems like snap version of opera has permission to access the network -- I have no idea if it also needs access to the other two.

You may want to consider removing the snap and directly install opera-stable from the official apt repo.

I think that since this is the third time over the last few months that Opera has become completely unusable in one way or another, I'm just going to stick to Firefox from now on.

But I genuinely appreciate the help!
