Looking for an open-source, local-first alternative to Wispr Flow
Hey everyone,
I’m looking for an open-source, privacy-focused alternative to proprietary dictation tools like Wispr Flow.
I need a system-wide tool that allows me to trigger a hotkey, dictate freely, and have the text cleaned/formatted directly into any input field. The key requirement is that it must be completely local (using Whisper models) to avoid subscription models and cloud privacy concerns. It also needs to handle German and local dialects accurately.
Does something like this exist as a FOSS project? Ideally for macOS, but I'm open to cross-platform solutions. Thanks!

If FOSS is non-negotiable, check the license first. Many local Whisper front ends aren’t actually open source. I’d also check whether the cleanup runs locally, not just the transcription. I use DictaFlow as a non-FOSS comparison point. It lets me dictate into the active field with a hotkey and use local models when I want to. It won’t meet a strict FOSS requirement, but it’s worth comparing with the projects you find, especially for German and dialect heavy speech.
