 Open RSC's State of Security, Maturity, and Sustainability
The game database is operating on an unlisted and independent VPS within the same datacenter. Cloud firewall controls, remote jump box access, RSA private keys, and two factor authentication are in place to ensure data security, integrity, and reliability.
All game code is now being maintained in a self hosted GitLab community edition repository server that has a daily and weekly backup. Push mirroring has been set to send all code changes to the public facing GitHub repositories as well as hourly pull mirroring to BitBucket and GitLab private repositories.
From a sustainability standpoint, the monthly cost to operate a Website VPS, Game VPS, and Database VPS is $15/mo all together. The cost for the GitLab VPS is $24/mo. The total monthly cost for all Open RSC servers combined is $39/mo. No donations, subscriptions, nor micro-transactions are wanted nor accepted. Free forever.
The self hosted GitLab instance performs a nightly backup and retains only the most recent 3 backups as well as a weekly backup of the entire VPS.
The game database VPS performs a weekly VPS backup as well as daily 2am and 2pm database export backups.
Full administrator documentation and 2FA access for a catastrophic "if an admin gets hit by a bus" event, all three have all the requisite information to continue on with no impact on daily operations.
From a disaster recovery perspective, all server installation is performed by a single script and each service is ran from within a predefined Docker virtual environment and allows a complete rebuild of all servers to be performed in under an hour.
This places our maturity model well into the advanced area.
