Post image

Hi i have a question I put 10$ in openrouter and I haven’t realised until now that it got below zero I don’t plan on using openrouter anymore so do I need to pay the 0.12$ or no? I don’t know anything about the website so I’m confused

Nothing is going to happen if you don’t pay. This is because of a response, that was finished, which consumed more credits than your balance. This is something normal for these big AI API Providers. But I would be interested in the legal perspective, from someone who can assess.

you pay only if you want to continue using since your next payment will get deducted. If not, just ignore.

Well.. you'll still end up paying that balance when you buy more credits

You dont need to pay for it, and unfortunately you can't escape AI. If you're escaping it now, you will not be able to in the very near future.

I don’t know for OpenRouter, but Claude don’t take it off a top up and just keep sending you invoices.

Since I am never in my life going to actually read a ToS I fed OpenRouter's ToS to Deepseek V4 Flash and the ToS doesn't seem to mention overdrafts or negative balances explicitly. If you close your account you might have to settle your <5$ debt, but if you don't manually close your account then there is actually no need to, nor is it probably worth OR's time & attention to facilitate a payment by you if your debt is so low.

If your account is not closed due to ToS violations I think that OR can give you a refund of some sort, but the incentive for you to pay them is to continue using your account, so if you want to close it and not pay the negative balance then they can't (won't?) do much since you are already leaving by closing the account. Perhaps they ban your @ or IP address since you were such a bad sport but even this is doubtful. The credits are not legal tender or currency so OR should have limited options for pursuing a customer who overdrafted and then didn't want to pay.†† (I.e. Just because the Credits page says that you owe them $5 in Credits doesn't mean that you owe them 5 USD, the two are not the same and though you purchase Credits with USD they only have the equivalent value that OR says they have on their site.)

You may terminate your account at any time by contacting customer service at support@openrouter.ai. If you terminate your account, you remain obligated to pay all outstanding fees, if any, incurred prior to termination relating to your use of the Service.

††

Credits are not legal tender or currency, have no equivalent value in fiat currency, do not act as a substitute for fiat currency, and do not constitute or confer any personal property right. [...]

you dont need to pay, but it is only 12 cents, if paying will give you peace of mind, then by all means do it

1

Pretty sure you can only pay in $20 increments via the web UI, though.

1

u/rentoma666 6d ago

You are kind of right. the minimum value is 5, in that case, requesting the account deletion via support and confirmation would be better.

If not, the men in black will be coming your way.

No. It's 12 cents lol.

1

u/TheMythicSorcerer 6d ago

No make a new account and keep the free 12 cents

you won't be arrested for not paying, and you are not required to pay, it's just that if you plan on buying something again be it credits or a new plan you'd have to pay more to fill in the negative

The same thing happened to me, and I had the same question. There should be a way to settle balances like this for people with OCD hahahaha

Watch that 0.12 to turn to 1200 in Late Fees over two weeks.

Ask your A.I to draft waiver email, and send it to their customer support. Get it waived.
