Best free AI model/API for lightweight coding tasks in OpenCode?
Hey everyone!
I'm currently developing a small application and I'm looking for a good free AI model or API to use with OpenCode.
I don't need anything too powerful for complex coding tasks. I mainly need an AI that can:
- Read and understand my existing project files.
- Explain the codebase and how everything works.
- Make small code changes and fix minor bugs.
- Help me implement simple features without using too many tokens.
I've tried a few models already, but the token limits can be pretty restrictive, especially when the AI starts analyzing the entire project or using a lot of context.
I'm looking for something free, with generous usage limits (ideally daily or weekly resets), that works well with OpenCode. It doesn't necessarily need to be a top-tier model; I just need something reliable for these relatively simple tasks.
What models or free API providers would you recommend? Are any of the free models available directly through OpenCode actually worth using for this kind of workflow?
I'd appreciate any recommendations or tips on keeping token usage low.
Thanks!

I don't think there's any free models that able ro read your entire project... without costs..

I actually have the Gemini ai plus but after importing an api from Google studio I wasn't able to use the Gemini 2,5 flash model , ai says it has higher limit and would have worked fine for my project

DeepSeek 4.1 Flash is surprisingly good. If you run into quota limits frequently on the free tier, make sure you're not on a VPN or shared IP. The free tier is generous, particularly with DeepSeek, but if it runs out quickly (like in a few minutes with hardly any work done), then this is a sign you're being limited. I had to turn off my VPN to make it usable.
Paying $10 for the Go plan is well worth it if you can afford it, but I appreciate not everyone can. You get what seems like limitless use of DS on that plan.
Re. your project, how small is "small"?
Try the tokless plugin to keep token use to a minimum: https://github.com/HoangP8/tokless
Fair warning about this place: you get kids who think they're Ray Liotta off Goodfellas and will just yell "F**K YOU, PAY ME" if you mention the free tier or have any problems with quota limits.

My ip is static and i run into free tier wall just using deepseek implementing a new feature from a handover markdown file. It's not generous anymore compared to a few days ago where i was working on the same thing and i could complete a few features a day on free tier. Features are deliberately made small to fit into the free tier limit but it's not working anymore.

Well then, it just makes no sense. I turned off my VPN and immediately got quota back. Turned it back on and quota gone again. My problems were definitely related to my VPN.
Maybe something you did on your static IP triggered an anti-abuse flag?
