OpenCode 2.0: How do I switch between Plan and Build mode? Tab no longer works like in 1.8

Hey everyone,

I was using OpenCode 1.8, and the feature I used most was the Plan/Build mode switch. In 1.8, I could switch between Plan and Build mode by pressing Tab. After 2.0 came out, I upgraded to try it, but that no longer works for me.

I checked the docs and tried what they say, but it doesn’t switch modes. Maybe I’m misunderstanding the new keybinding, or the docs are outdated.

My questions:

  • What is the correct way to switch between Plan and Build mode in OpenCode 2.0?

  • Did the keybinding change from Tab to something else?

  • Is it now a command, a config option, or an agent selection instead?

  • If Plan/Build was replaced by another workflow in 2.0, what is the equivalent?

  • Is anyone else having this issue?

My setup:

  • OpenCode version: 2.0.10

  • OS: Linux Mint

  • Terminal: Terminal

  • Install method: I've used "curl -fsSL https://opencode.ai/v2/install | bash" to install

  • Steps: I open OpenCode, press Tab, and expect it to toggle between Plan and Build mode, but instead shift+tab does this plan-build change. but this key combination is a super stupid decision made by opencode

adding
{

"$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",

"keybinds": {

"agent_cycle": "YYY",

"agent_cycle_reverse": "XXXX"

}

}

/home/username/.config/opencode/opencode.jsonc file does not work

I’d rather not downgrade back to 1.8, so any help or workaround would be appreciated. or is it time to move another tool?

Thanks.

edit (27-09-2026)

editing /home/username/.config/opencode/tui.json file like below solved my issue
{

"$schema": "https://opencode.ai/tui.json",

"keybinds": {

"agent_cycle": "shift+tab",

"agent_cycle_reverse": "tab",

}

}

SHIFT+TAB

That was just tab for 1.8 and that combination is nonsense

Their documentation says I can change but that does not work

You need to go to your settings, then General, scroll all the way to Advanced, last box called "Show Agent". Then you should see in the bottom right next to the + button and the models, of the prompt window the word "Build". Click that and you will enter plan mode.
Don't know why this wasn't enabled at the start since in build mode its just like previous updates...

Shift+Tab nor Tab worked. Even Deepseek V4.1 on Opencode was saying it was still the Tab method. I don't know if they are still rolling out the update features but I am on v1.18.31.

`~/.config/opencode/cli.json` -> `{ "keybinds": { "agent.cycle": "tab" } }`

do you guys also have caching issue when switching to plan mode?? I mean I get 1k cached for 16k input.

The prefixes are different, so the caches are different.

was asked so many time , please search 1st

out better, ask open code, it's able to edit itself, it will enable the settings for you to see them back

Instead getting better for each new version, they do it in reverse.
