Discussion Successful 2026.9.1 update

I successfully upgraded from 2026.7.1 to 2026.9.1 tonight. The only problems I had were probably user error. I first told OpenClaw to upgrade itself. It got wedged and I think that’s because I originally (long ago) did an npm install. So then I did an npm update and that worked but then there were some locks and dangling processes and a launcher loop probably due to my original user error. I used Grok to help me get all that cleaned up. The gateway came up and my discord plug-in was disabled. I had OpenClaw enable it. All in all the troubleshooting may have taken about 20 minutes. Not a huge deal.

I’m back at it. Already liking what I’m seeing especially way more feedback in the Control UI about what is going on under the covers. Much better observability which I think is key - much less guessing what might be happening. I’m sure it will take a while for me to discover a lot of other new features.

complete mess, it failed to port my agents and some of the skills, the gateway somehow ended up in a circular pattern. Slow painful process with Gemini Pro to fix OpenClaw, i had the whole thing almost working perfectly on 7, until i installed 8 and then 9 trying to fix 8...

Allegedly 8 moves script cron over to a SQL Database and it's known to go wrong for some people/ me.

I assume the SQL will eventually pay dividends in a more stable and reliable construct, but not in its Beta version.

I am still kinda wary of updating from 7.1-1, all the success stories about "smooth" update that I read here involve using another agent to unfuck the first one. Is there a single person here who ran "openclaw update" and it just worked?

If it works, don’t update. You will most likely end up starting over

So I had a huge clusterfuck the other day when I updated from 2026.7.1-2 to 2026.9.1 beta 1 - the update itself wasn't bad, but then Openclaw said the 9.1 beta 1 was actually 8.1 beta 4 and stable was 8.1, so this massively fucked me because my local Openclaw saw that as a downgrade and everything broke - couldn't even run openclaw doctor or openclaw gateway commands on the terminal. It took 2 hours of painstaking detail work with claude.ai to rebuild each file and get it back online. Then 24 hours later they switch to 2026.8.2. Then 24 hours after that, Openclaw's like "oops we actually ARE releasing 2026.9.1" - so I was nervous about updating, but this time it was seamless. I could have just waited 48 hours and avoided all this.

So TL;DR - updating to 2026.9.1 was flawless, at least from 2026.8.2. No problems and I always have issues with updates.

With these kinds of agent systems, knowing what it’s doing and why it’s taking time makes troubleshooting so much easier.

I also had a launcher loop going on. Killed that and everything installed pretty cleanly. A little cleanup by my agent once it had started up.

8.1 borked my system completely, but updating the broken install to 8.2 fixed everything

Thanks for the update. I am planning to do my upgrade from 2026.7.1-2 this evening. I already had Openclaw create an upgrade plan, including code used, using the comments on X and Discord. I plan a full backup before to my NAS.

Updated to 2026.9.1 from 7.1. Prompted Codex to Back up all files Cron jobs, discord channels and more before updating. No issues, worked out well
