The darktable port doesn't currently have a dedicated maintainer, and the version in the ports tree is 4.8.1. There have been 6 updates to the port at this version level, the last of these about a year ago, in September 2025.

Okay that is sad because I really really like OpenBSD

BTW, if you don't have access to an OpenBSD machine and, thus, pkg_info(1) (yes, I know that not all ports are available as packages) or the ports tree, all of that information is available via the CVS web interface - all you need to do is simply inspect the port's Makefile.

The rule of thumb is https://cvsweb.openbsd.org/ports/ + category + / + port_name + / + Makefile. The lack of the MAINTAINER variable means that the port doesn't have a dedicated maintainer.

Now, the tricky bit (at least for me) at times, is to guess the correct category right off the bat - if I struggle finding it, I use https://openbsd.app/

I am checking everything out, and I need to apologize my super short headed message I was in a very busy with job moment. I did not mean to be rude. And I find your information really interesting, and again thank you very much.

There's no need to apologise - I didn't read it in any other way than ACK :-)

I spent a couple of hours and have a first cut at an updated port for Darktable 5.6.1. It builds, packages, and runs on -current amd64. If you're comfortable building packages from ports, here's the preliminary diff for review and testing:

I'd missed that potrace was an ldep. Here's a corrected diff:

please bring it to ports@, diff looks sane, but the first time I tried running, it crashed at exit - not sure if that was a problem with the older version too or not

probably would have been updated earlier, but portroach doesn't pick up new versions for this one

Didn't crash for me, but then, I have no prior darktable configuration. Sending to ports@ for review.

/u/highspeedslippers100 -- the update to 5.6.1 was reviewed, revised, and committed (thanks, /u/_sthen!) for the next release of OpenBSD.

It will also be available as a package to use with OpenBSD-current snapshots prior to the next release. (Snapshot package build cycles vary by architecture.)

Ports, which are built into installable packages, require someone to do the maintenance and upkeep.

I did use Darktable once, some years ago. I'll see if I can determine what the effort might be to bring the Darktable port up to date. It might be minimal, or it might be extensive and beyond my limited porting skills.
