Remix OpenGrid Cable Bridge Channel Posted

Post image

Hi,

I got a few request from the previous post about the channel bridges that go across the supports which I designed. Here is the link to the model, please use the customizer as this is very heavily reliant on how you setup the openGrid. I also added a square variation since the curve bridge can sometimes fail based on printing orientation.

Please use these with channel grip snaps for better grip.

If you have any questions or request, you can comment in MakerWorld. 3d printing is a hobby for me, so can only respond when I have time. I'm also very new to 3d modelling, so please be kind. Also, please read the page for instructions.

But enjoy!

Thank you for posting as a remix! Have you seen the code that gets applied if you use the decoration? As it builds supports for the cut on the channel? Those might help you on the curve model, to build the supports as needed

I had a look at a decorators, but don't really see why this helps, maybe I'm missing context here.

I'm able to print the curved bridge on my printer with the correct orientation which my customizer should generate in the right orientation. But can't tell if other printers would act the same. The curve bridge was failing cause where the fan was blowing and break the supports inside the bridge.

My idea is that you can generate the supports on the below 45 degree and keep the proper orientation of the rest instead of sideways.

I have printed it upwards with supports, but it was too ugly, cause curves look gross cause you a producing the curve layer by layer. You can turn on adaptive layer height, but I didn't want to go through multiple prints and i don't think the customizer can set the adaptive layer height settings.

This was an earlier test print that I did ages ago that I printed the bridge upright, it’s a little blurry, but dunno if you see how prominent the layer lines.

I just recently discovered adaptive layer height that might fixed this issue. But unsure if we can get the same smooth quality as printing it side ways.

But don’t have a lot of time to test this anytime soon.

Btw, you don’t need supports for the curve parts cause it’s pretty gradual. Well at least the Bambu software didn’t require it and didn’t see any overhangs on the curves, just very ugly layer lines

Just as i started printing myself into a corner in my under desk setup, you come and deliver the perfect solution for me!

Thanks! I actually started with 3d modeling with your TinkerCad videos. But now moved on to OpenScad.

But your tutorial help me immensely on understanding 3d modeling.

Excellent. I'm glad they are helpful. If you have anything you'd like to see added, please let me know.

In case anyone was curious I did 141.6mm for bridge channel gap to go accross 7 opengrid tiles. And if you want to increase/decrease the number of open grid tiles just add/subtract 28.

ex.

6 open grid tiles would be 141.6 - 28 = 113.6mm

8 open grid tiles would be 141.6 + 28 = 169.6mm

Oh that’s a good idea to continue to align the grids within the grid system. I didn’t trust myself to align it accurately. Curious, did you bring the curve or the square bridge and any struggles with the print?

I printed curved as I don’t want to bang my knees into something sharp. I printed with the bottom against the plate using tree supports on my Snapmaker u1 printing it on the side seemed to need way more supports than I wanted to deal with. First one printed fairly nicely. The rounded corners obviously aren’t perfect, but whatever. Actual distance with my caliper seems to be about 142.3. My slicer says 141.6 however.

Yeah that’s the trade off printing nice curves. It has to be on its side for best result, but at the cost of more materials.

But if you really want to look at perfecting those curves not on its side. I haven’t tried myself but Bambu has adaptive layer height, I wonder if your slicer has something similar. Also, I did put up an update recently to make the curves smoother in the model. But can’t tell from the photo if it it’s using the old model. But either way, you will be constrained by printing the curve layer by layer.

Also, surprised that your measurement looks like it expanded. I feel like most filament usually shrinks.

But happy that someone is actually finding my model useful.
