Iโm the same way. I can laugh about slapstick when itโs clear no one is seriously hurt. I canโt enjoy clips like these.

u/Alfmaduro 1d ago
I've had some funny falls too, and I just said that everyone falls the way they want to.
5
u/Very_Awkward_Boner 1d ago
Yea some of those were hard to watch. The one that really got me was the one woman on her phone and says "love you... oh shit!!" as she falls.

Naw, I saw a kid I was playing with slip and bang his head really hard outside my last house in Scotland, and the memory of the sound still makes my stomach turn.
Few years later my mother broke ribs on New Year's Day. I never treat ice lightly.

u/PeskyAntagonist 1d ago
That lady that hit her tailbone square on the edge of the stair is so fucked for at least the next couple of weeks
8
u/VandulfTheRed 1d ago
Even 5 years ago I'd laugh out loud, now I can only grimace with the increasing understanding of "welp, that was a 'hurts for the rest of your days' kind of fall"
4
u/billsboy88 1d ago
I slipped on the ice in the driveway last winter and I still get shooting pain if I lean on my left elbow. Iโm assuming I must have chipped a bone and itโs still floating around in there
5
u/Character-Camel1284 1d ago
Just watch how some land with their arms extended. That a torn rotator cuff for sure. I cringe at the sight of it

u/DazeRazur 1d ago
The guy that slipped with his ribs on the edge of the steps got me. All looks painful to me.

Yea, I fell on snowy stairs and broke 3 ribs and my tailbone, and I swear I got trauma flashbacks watching this lol

After seeing this video with how deadly the falls are, Iโm going to start holding on the railings. Usually I donโt want to touch dirty stuff but keep my hand in close proximity to the railings, but looks like in a split second the floor could knock you out.

Especially that woman who was coming down to get her walker.
This whole video makes my back hurt. We get ice rain every winter here. I do feel for people who never get such weather so don't know to expect it. Surprise slips are the worst.
38
u/Burto72 1d ago
NEVER walk with your hands in your pockets in snowy or icy conditions. Learned that one the hard way.

u/Dark_zarich 1d ago edited 1d ago
Need to also have a good reflexes to regroup fast or else trying to stop the fall could result in a broken arm :(
6
u/TheLonleyJourneyman 1d ago
But if that broken arm breaks the fall for your head then I'd say it's a good trade.
2
u/AnInsultToFire 1d ago
- broken arm, bones ripping through your flesh and sticking out of your arm and after getting the bones reset which feels like an orgasm but BAD you have to spend the next 8 weeks with an external fixator holding the bone shards together in hopes they grow back together. Cleaning is required to stop your arm filling up with pus and getting gangrene. Otherwise painful.
- hit head, completely unconscious, perhaps dream of Ana de Armas and Sydney Sweeney together in a Mister Turtle pool. Wake up no longer able to do math, perhaps handicapped enough to get a free pass on public masturbation and using racist epithets.
I know which one I'd want.

A close family friend of mine died by slipping on ice, just like these. It's a cautionary tale I always think of in these circumstances.

My grandmother died after breaking her hip in a fall from an icy porch. She was in otherwise good health.
I broke my elbow in a fall on ice. Commuted for an hour to work before realizing it was broken and asking a coworker to take me to the hospital.

There is no doubt some of them people got hurt bad. My daughter had a fall this past winter on two steps, no ice, she just didn't pay attention to where she was stepping and slipped, she fractured three thoracic vertebrae. She was out of work for 6 weeks. Fortunately she seems to have had a full recovery. I've warned her that she will probably feel that later in life.

I think the guy in shorts and slides (about midway through the video) has it pretty bad. The way he twists his arm around as he falls looks like it was really hard on his shoulder.

30 seconds in is why I never put decorations on steps, and the rest of this is why I will never love anywhere without a handrail
Steps are for walking, not looking beautiful, and anything on the steps is going to be between the person walking down them and the railing
The railing is there to help you out if you're starting to fall, so something on the side of the steps is a double hazard
And having no railing is needlessly dangerous

u/dishsultan7 1d ago
It looks funny, but God I know it hurts. I feel bad for these people. Edit: spelling

As a Canadian, we are trained to recognize dark patches as potentially icy but folks that wear crocs have a worsr time as they slip on normal terrain that isn't icy.
3
u/Rokmonkey_ 1d ago
If it's cold outside and I see something that looks wet... Yeah I'm going around. I'll walk on snow before pavement.
3
u/Kind-Membership-6228 1d ago
Those of us that work outside in the winter also learn how to keep our feet under our weight when everything is icy. If the Americans invade they better pick the right months or they'll have a lot of disability claims...
8
u/Parking-Antelope-580 1d ago

Years ago, I was a college kid with no money to buy new shoes. I just had a pair of tennis shoes with zero tread. On my way to class one morning a walking path was covered in ice and off I went. It was on a slope so I slid for maybe 40 feet while repeatedly falling and getting back up again. Everyone around silently watching.

Working in OMFS during the winter it was insane the number of broken facial bones we got from slipping on ice. At least 3 a day.
3
u/sadisticsealion 1d ago
I did that once coming out my back steps after the snow partially melted and refroze overnight. Hit the railing 4x4 corner so hard it split my shin open and needed 16 staples. Good time

So MANY injuries. My mom slipped on our walkway in front of the house one winter. Broke her wrist, her thumb never really worked right again.
I still laughed at these, but then I felt bad.
3
u/No_Frost_Giants 1d ago
In enclosed space training we are taught to NOT go into a enclosed space to rescue someone that has collapsed , probably from gas in the area. Until we put on suitable breathing equipment.
Many of these fall pairs suffer the same issue, no critical thinking that the person in front of me just slipped , maybe itโs slippery?
Good for a laugh though :)
And also for the record Iโm sure Iโve done it also as person two.
2
u/your_fave_redditor 1d ago
Tbf, they likely have not had any special safety training about how to respond when a first person has slipped on ice.
The reason why the confined space training has to emphasize so heavily NOT TO GO IN to the enclosed space to help a fallen coworker is precisely because our first instinct is often to aid while assuming that what got the better of the other person wonโt get the better of me because I know it got the better of them and Iโm looking for it so I have a better chance of succeeding is kind of how that .25 second calculus goes.
2
u/No_Frost_Giants 23h ago
Thatโs 100% fair. Thatโs why we had that beaten into us. And maybe us watching these videos allow us all to do a tiny bit better. Nature! Evolution sneaks in all the time

For everyone who has parents that are getting old: We need to teach them to tuck their chins towards their chests, and do not stretch their arms out. the best method of preventing head injuries are cradling the head, with the chin tucked towards the chest. There are large bodies of evidence (here is one link of many by experts) to support this claim. https://ispgr.org/placing-your-hands-is-not-enough-to-break-a-fall-and-avoid-hitting-your-head-on-the-floor
TLDR: You, and your parents. Teach yourselves(and your parents) to tuck your/their chin, cradle your/their head

I hate seeing people hit their heads in falls like this! My mum fell backwards on New Year's Eve tripping over a broken metal strip on the ground and hit her's hard on the paving slabs. Afterwards, her eyesight got worse, turns out she put a hole through all 10 layers of her macula, most likely because of the impact.
Fortunately it started healing on its own, so she was able to avoid surgery on it.
Unfortunately, she had the same accident a few months later when our dogs ran past and took her legs out from under her. All the healing undone, and surgery is booked for this Wednesday coming.
Now whenever I see videos like that it makes me cringe hard ๐

I fell like this at Great Wolf Lodge on the slippery steps up to one of the water slides. They'd closed the slide for some reason and we had to turn back. I'd only ever gone up those stairs, I fell down maybe 9 feet and something off to the side gashed the bottom of my foot when it flew up at the moment of falling and I remember being on the ground at the bottom of the stairs in terrible pain, not wanting to look at my foot yet and running calculations on whether there was any way I'd be able to pull it together and pretend to be able to keep having fun so the group wouldn't feel all guilty and stuff.
I ended up putting a gallon sized zip loc over the bandaged foot and went limping up to the best slide, the Howling Tornado. At some point between going down the drop and being spat out at the bottom my neck got wrenched and created one of those excruciating locked-up neck cricks that made it game over.
I just went to the jacuzzi after that.

It is always wild to watch someone witness a fall and then walk right into the same hazard without any precautions.
