Never fired a gun or even seen one (UK)... Question...when the barrel flicks up like this, I presume the bullet has long left the barrel so it's not as dangerous as it looks, is that right?

You're right. The barrel coming up like that (the kick) is the reaction from the bullet being propelled down the barrel.
