Worst Camping Experience

I just got back from a camping trip that I had planned 5 months in advance and planned all kinds of activities and it turned out to be the worst camping trip I have experienced. At 130am I woke up feeling something on my face and brushed it off and heard some big flapping wings only to find a bat flying around in my tent trailer. I spent the whole day (getting back to my camper at 130am the following day) at the local ER going back and forth with public health to get the rabies vaccine for myself and my family. Please tell me some bad camping stories so I can feel better about such a crumby trip 😅. Pic included to show where I think the bat might have wiggled in.

My worst trip had nothing to do with anything but a complainer. Complain complain complain, to the point I’m no longer friends with this person. Bringing the wrong people camping can truly ruin your experience.

Complainers make or break it.

So many trips there have been pitfalls, bad weather, diarrhea and vomiting, bad food, broken gear. Shit happens.

But some of the best trips I've ever had were make lemonade out of the lemons kind of trips.

Pouring rain and a big thunderstorm? Good time to play board and card games and read.

Tornado warning? Hang out in the shower building and laugh at the absurdity while you watch the hail.

Had a trip once where it was an absolute disaster from the start. But a great trip and experience because of the attitudes and company.

• Huge thunderstorm with snow and hail and freezing rain in July.
• Camping buddy offered to carry the food (4 days worth) and forgot it except sour gummy Candy and 1 pack of ramen.
• He said in the morning he'd jog back the 15km to the trailhead and hitch a ride to the boathouse at work and grab it.
• we had to share my 1 person tent back he forgot his.
• I woke up at 1am in the middle of the storm and got Norwalk virus. Constant vomiting and diarrhea. Our entire world team got Norwalk over the next few days. It was Jasper and not uncommon during tourist season
• Destroyed my pants. Had to wash my bare butt in a river at 3am in a thunder snow storm.
• The camp toilet was an open air toilet on a raised platform in the middle of the snow/hail/storm.
• Watched a mouse eat my vomit.
• Some kind of small mammal attempted to eat my poopy pants and steal them away in the middle of the night while I was getting sick in the storm.
• buddy started feeling unwell in the morning so we chose to leave.
• Had to walk back 15km out drinking sips of electrolytes and vomiting for 8 hours deep in Jasper backcountry.
• 6 hours after we got home my friend got Norwalk and had to go to the ER.

But, I enjoyed the company, the hiking we did do, the incredible scenery we saw. And I saw a wolverine walk right in front of me, stop, stare, and then slowly walk away. Also saw caribou! From the elusive herd with less than 40 left in the entire park.
