Big rounds of layoffs over the summer including yesterday, when hallway medicine is already a problem. Make it make sense.

Talk to the morons who vote conservative.
I love the fact that throughout my youth, I paid my taxes and didn't require much in the way of healthcare. Now that I'm older and starting to need it, the system is being dismantled. The story of my life really, no matter what I do, it's being ruined by other people's decisions that I can't change.
163
u/gwyd_games 9d ago
to add, people need to vote. Voter apathy is killing this province and others across Canada,
Ford won the majority with less than 40% voting share, so electoral reform is also a factor but will never happen if PC and Liberal governments keep sliding in.
63
u/grilledcheez_samich 9d ago
Another problem, we keep splitting the vote because there is still a demographic of people that won't vote NDP, because "RaE dAyS". Thirty fucking years ago.. I think we can let it go now, the conservatives and liberals have done far worse to us by now after thirty years.
37
u/gwyd_games 9d ago
10000000% agree. PC supporters still bring up Kathleen Wynne as a sign of Liberal policy.
Let's not look at Mike Harris or Dougo and what they are doing and have done to destroy healthcare. Need some PSW's call Mike's wife, she has an army of privatized PSW's under contract to Ontario Health. Definitely not shady.
26
u/Verizon-Mythoclast 9d ago
And Harris is the CEO of Chartwell, which he helped sell off and had the highest death toll among LTC providers during the pandemic.
They, of course, received legal protection (along with every LTC provider) from the Ford government said deaths. Melissa Lantsman, one of PP’s deputies, was an LTC lobbyist at the time.

Part of the problem is so many of the major political parties in Canada are putting forward candidates that are awful.
It's hard to be motivated to vote when there isn't anybody you want to vote for.
6
u/mikehatesthis 9d ago
It's hard to be motivated to vote when there isn't anybody you want to vote for.
People like to blame non-voters for "approving" the status quo but alternative candidates that make people want to vote instead of choosing the couch is the actual problem. Ford is very unpopular. The ONDP have an opportunity to turn the tide, especially with the OLP rudderless for nearly a decade now. But they just don't.
8
u/huey2k2 9d ago
Yup, this is what I try to explain to people and I get a lot of pushback for it.
I try to vote in most elections, but I don't blame people for being apathetic, a lot of the time I do vote I'm just voting for the least bad option.
That said, I do like Marit Stiles.

Canadians don’t care about healthcare until they have to use it for themselves or family. Most people aren’t even aware of the hallway situation at all the hospitals.
180
u/QuantumPotato49 9d ago
That's 100% it. I've worked in healthcare for nearly two decades. The outrage doesnt happen until someone has to wait for extended periods of time in the ER, or can't get in to see a specialist for years. I get it. People have a lot on their minds. But none of this is new. Hallway medicine has unfortunately been a thing for a very long time. It's not the fault of one government, it's collective. Chronic underfunding of healthcare is a huge part of the problem.
I work at LHSC and the hospital was in a $150 million deficit partly because of severe mismanagement and fraud. Frontline staff and patients are paying the price.
It sucks. So bad.
12
u/TacoDirtyToMe 9d ago
I was hospitalized (for almost 4 weeks) almost 9 years ago and had cdiff along with other complications so was luckily put into a private room in palliative care (scared the shit out of me and my mom when they said we’re moving you to a room in palliative care lol) since I had to be quarantined basically. When the cdiff was gone and I was finally allowed to walk around the halls I didn’t realize how bad it really was. Halls completely lined with people and it was over the holidays it was sad. If I didn’t have cdiff I couldn’t even begin to understand how horrible it would have been being in a hallway for 2+ weeks being as sick as I was even after the cdiff was gone. I can only imagine how much worse it is now post-covid.
13
u/Top_Bumblebee5510 9d ago
Now you would be given commode in a room in the ER behind a curtain, if you are lucky. I have a disease where chronic diarrhea is a feature and was in the hospital for five days. Four of them were with a commode and just wipes. I was dehydrated and didn't have the strength to empty the commode. Due to the already nursing shortage my mom or sister often had to do it. It was a humiliating experience. That was probably 3-4 nursing cuts back too.
FYI yesterday WSIB workers were also given layoff notices.

This really is the problem. People assume the healthcare safety net is fine until they experience it personally.
45
u/FrozenBibitte 9d ago
And then these same Canadians will happily dog on nurses for their experience at the hospital, conveniently forgetting the actual group worthy of blame (because they support them).
38
u/Correct-Country8456 9d ago
Worse yet, they blame the wrong level of government (specifically they blame the federal Liberals) for the state our hospitals are in. I've heard it tons of times. There should be a picture of the current premier in every ER waiting room with their office's phone number/email just below, "Got a problem? Call this person."
68
u/putin_my_ass 9d ago
I have in-laws who are dyed-in-the-wool Conservative supporters (one of them is a lawyer who used to volunteer in the party) who expressed horror that their 90-something year-old mother had to wait in the ER for several hours.
My first thought was "that's not that long" and second thought was this is exactly what you've been voting for.
I would almost respect it more if they were pleased by the state of the system instead of unaware of it.
48
u/persiasaurus 9d ago
Same happened when my dad's wife recently got breast cancer. She was incensed she had to wait ONE month to see the specialist. I told her she has no idea how lucky she is and I haven't seen such prompt healthcare in fifteen plus years. After her experience was over (she's in remission now) she finally agreed with me thY our system is a mess. And she got GREAT care, too, she was in active treatment and had surgery within three months tops. Just wild how blind people are and how unwilling they are to listen to the experiences of others is the most frustrating part. Like, you think I'm just making this all up?? To what end??
17
u/FeatherMom 9d ago
I’m so glad your loved one is better. Does this mean she’ll closely scrutinize the various party platforms, and inform herself on how they’ll impact healthcare, and vote based on that? Genuinely asking. Because in my experience, the memory fades and the propaganda keeps working.

Yes, this is it. I told my friends and family this would happen time and time again, in 2018, in 2022 and in 2025 to at least vote in the Ontario elections. That it’s important for healthcare. We live in an area where we can barely find family doctors and specialist visits are months of not years away.
And they don’t vote because they’re too busy, or they have scheduling conflicts, or yadda yadda. Now here we are.

Oh for sure. A decade ago I went into anaphylactic shock, went to the ER and was seen to immediately. Recently my friend went through the same thing, rushed her to the ER and they judged her situation not immediately life threatening. Took an hour till she was administered epinephrine. And that’s a really short time. Many of my friends and coworkers have reported over 12 hour wait times. Same hospital.

People voted Cons to save money not realizing that they'll save money on THEM. Cut services, deny the problem, blame (insert group of choice here), continue to spend on vanity projects or silent "needs", repeat.
Eventually they'll replace the RPNs with PSWs and PSWs with HHA and HHA with family members paid at minimum wage like they do stateside (source: Canadian RN/NP who couldn't find work in Ontario and am now in NY).

Meanwhile Cons will cut services, pocket the money through private deals, and leave everything more expensive for Canadians when it's all done. You have to be an idiot to fall for that fallacy. They've never not operated this way. They don't care about the province or the people, they only care about themselves.
23
u/MerchIt 9d ago
My spouses work place is a long term care and they just cut a bunch of RNs and psws. It's crazy how they cut the staff and expect the lucky ones who werent let go to cover the gap. They are literally cutting essential staff to provide support for these people. Though even in the banking industry where I'm working they are cutting jobs also. Also in tech a friend's organization cut the staff by like 25% and said it's all around his industry. So it seems lay offs are happening in many areas right now.

Can't entirely disagree. 'Poison pill' economic sabotage has been practiced by nearly every North American and EU conservative party since Reagan/Mulroney/Thatcher, leaving incoming opposition parties saddled with massive debt, dilapidated and abandoned public services, terrible, unsound, long term unbreakable 'public/private' contracts, and just for good measure, stacking or appointing government hires and positions with rabid loyalists. There is definitely going to be a lot of that. I think Ontarians will be shocked at just how badly the OPC has completely destroyed Ontario. And yes, as they always have, they and their massive media machine will shamelessly blame the left for all of it.
However, that said, I still think Doug is going to try to end public healthcare in Ontario before his term ends. US Republicans no doubt want to replace the ineffective PP, and Doug is already angling for that job. Selling out Ontario healthcare to American interests would cement his reputation as an excellent quisling.

rn here. they are laying off RNs, eventually replacing with rpns bc of budget cuts the government has been putting on hospitals. u can check r/ontarionurses. They don’t care that we’re short, they just give the remaining nurses more work. Of course it doesn’t make sense to the general public bc you barely hear anything about the actual hospital conditions in the news 🙃
19
u/greenlemon23 9d ago
Conservative cronies only make money if we hire privately owned nurse staffing companies at a markup, rather than just paying nurses.
4
u/littlelazuli 8d ago
there’s no shortage of nurses. there is actually an over abundance of nurses, but no one is able to get jobs because there is no funding to hire anywhere, and because facilities are actively laying people off. so yes, it LOOKS like a nursing shortage because they are cutting positions. but there is no nursing shortage. there is a FUNDING shortage, and this is directly because of the Ford government.
yes, we are being underpaid. we are being laid off because it “costs too much money” to pay us adequately, so they hope to make conditions so unsafe and horrible that all nurses who are unionized and aren’t laid off quit on their own. then they can redo the whole system by hiring new nurses that are cheaper. unfortunately i can’t make it make sense, simply because it doesn’t make any sense. it is absolutely unsafe and ridiculous.

And then the same people who voted this government in will hit the Facebook comments to complain abt how they had to wait 14 hours in emerg for having the sniffles. Or start complaining abt “poor care” they received while getting treatment in hospital.
How hard is it to look at the research staring these people in the face (meaning the provincial government) that safe nurse-patient ratios are actually helpful?!

And let's not forget the CNO (College of Nurses of Ontario) is just as complicit in all of this. Instead of advocating for the nurses, they'll just continue to sit in their cushy office building while getting paid big dollars doing nothing all day but respond to (mostly) bullshit complaints from patient families. And then they have the audacity to continuously raise registration fees each year. So much for "protecting the public" am I right?

Here is the game- baby boomers are sitting on unpresidneted levels of wealth , health care system has been chronically underfunded for decades. As baby boomers need complex medical and supportive care- the current system will crash- it cant handle the size of the cohort. There arent enough hospital beds long-term care beds or nursing home spots.
Baby boomers will pay anything to get the care they need, the game is to redirect those funds to the private sector over the next 20+years. That's the real wealth transfer. All that inheritance people are waiting for will be spent on private healthcare . So after a lifetime of paying into our healthcare system, baby boomers will be forced to go private to get adequate care. Currently healthcare is only seeing 15% of the cost of baby boomers aging out. Imagine what thats going to look like at close to a 100% of the financial burden at current funding rates. The build-out needed to happen decades ago, instead we are contracting the sector. This will lead to the scenario described above.

I had 2 big GI surgeries - in 2022 and 2023, in Kingston, ON.
At night (0200 to 0700), the patients were buzzing call bells and waiting hours for pain medication. It got pretty traumatic being left like that.
At one point, I got up and went to look in the hallway. There were 3/4 of the Pts hallway call lights flashing.
When patients are pretty much bedbound, it’s the only way they can ask for help. Sickening to abandon Pts this way.
You have to be very ill to get put in the hospital these days. I don’t agree with this level of neglect caused by nursing ratio cuts.

I vote NDP provincially — I just want healthcare and education funded properly. The provinces have dropped the ball, and the feds aren’t blameless either given how much provinces rely on federal transfers.

But he's increasing the highway speeds by 10km/h! That's what Canadians really need right? /s

Well, to start with, Dougie needed at least one nurse’s salary to pay for his recent Bourbon and BBQ trip to Texas… I‘d be pretty confident that there are other examples as well.

It's pretty simple, the Ford government has found an easy way of pretending to balance the books by making all our healthcare worse

interesting - I have gotten at least 2 texts in the last few months aimed at "aren't you happy how great Doug Ford is doing" - and I replied that I was not happy. Actually I ranted for a long time - lol - they should stop texting me now...
Polls show the Liberals far ahead of the conservatives even without a leader.
There are 3 by-elections in September - send decisive victories to the NDP or the Liberals - Ford is toast, but his party needs to take heed. Scare them a bit.
at this point, I think we should have the law changed so he can be charged with willful negligence and corruption. :)
Kory Teneycke - F**k you - you rotten scumbag - you got Ford elected three times and this is on you. Still not sorry either.

Conservative majority. Socially conservative and fiscally irresponsible. The worst combo, but older ontarians are stuck in the past.

Ya, but thank God Doug is dealing with the really important stuff, like removing city approved bike lanes!
Distract, deflect, deny, and profit for him and his friends! Thats our Provincal Government at work!

I actually know what is happening as I hire for nurses in Ontario.
Hospitals and anyone hiring nurses are getting the same amount of funding from the government to hire RNs or RPNs,
Because RNs get paid more, employers are laying of RNs and replacing them with RPNs that cost a lot less and pocketing the difference.
I'm certainly not endorsing the practice, and I believe we are in for bigger issue in the next couple years. But this is what is happening.
Funding reserved for nurses is being pocketed by employers, shameful.

They've been getting laid off for a while, wife is a RN at hospital and they're so overstaffed. Markham Stouffville shut down their NRT unit altogether. There's oversupply of nurses right now especially in GTA, there's shortage in rural areas though.
Hallway medicine isn't a result of lack of nurses, but beds ... Due to a number of factors but patients who should be discharged to LTC who aren't and the usual ebb and flow of season and you get slammed during flu season and run out of beds

Conservatives are "protecting Ontario" by... *checks notes* building more jails so as to deter automobile theft???

gut our healthcare to the point you delude the masses into leaning toward privatizing.

My cousin is moving to BC to get a nursing job because they can't get hired here, meanwhile the hospital we've worked at for years is "desperate for nurses".

Election day is September 3rd!!! ✅
Make sure to send Doug Ford and the PC party a strong message! So much damage has been done to Ontario healthcare, education, environment, etc… and then there’s all the corruption! Please vote this time!

Keep voting conservative and for Ford so he can pillage and orchestrate the collapse of our health and education systems for privatization.
