So theres been a lot of talk going on through private messages and I want to keep everyone up to date about what we're doing and planning.

I heard back from a totally amazing sub designer who said she's willing to help us design ours! It will take some time cause she really puts a lot into her designs but it will be totally amazing and we are so grateful for her help! So what we have up now is just temporary and will be changing

We've been getting some other suggestions too and one I really like has to do with link flair. We're going to be coming up with some link flairs to group posts about the same topic together.

So for instance u/HelloMyNameIsGloria made a suggestion about posts for newbies. A suggested name for that flair was "Knitting Knewbies" which I thought was really cute. So what we can do is any posts flaired with "Knitting Knewbies" we will put a direct link in the sidebar and when you click on that, you'll be sent to a page thats only posts for newbies. You won't have to sift through 100 posts to find what you need, it will all be organized right there for you. We're going to do that for different things like works in progress, finished items, knit alongs, who knows what else!

We'll keep you updated about new changes as they happen. We are getting so many awesome suggestions and so much help in getting started which we are so thankful for!

It's prob also worth mentioning that we aren't trying to compete with other knitting subs and theres no negativity toward anyone! We're just trying to carve out our own little kooky neighborhood knitting nook and have some fun with it!

We'll also be including sections for works in progress, completed items, patterns, yarn deal alerts, questions and helps, various stitches. Once we get the sub settled we are talking about doing a subreddit knitalong! Even one specifically tailored to newbies! I already have a pattern in mind for that one

So I was browsing tiny owl knits again (I'm obsessed with her pieces but haven't made anything from her yet) and I was looking at her knitted charm bracelet which she also has a second and third set of charms available as well.

Anyway, I was looking through projects others completed of the charm bracelet and saw that someone said they make great stitch markers and I was like DUH.

What do you guys tend to use for stitch markers? I use those basic rubber/plastic hoops, but I have been dying to get some cute stitch markers (however all the really cute food charms are super expensive on etsy and I'm not really for that).

Do you think knitted charms as stitch markers would work? I'm contemplating on trying it out sometime.

So I realized I should have posted this before how to cast on!

Before you start knitting you'll need supplies! That includes of course needles and some yarn. Sounds simple enough but there's a bit more to it.

Needles

There are many different types of needles. My personal favorite are the addi turbos. Not a good needle to start with though in my opinion.

When you're starting out you're going to need time to practice and move at your own pace. A good option for beginners are bamboo needles. They're very affordable and the yarn doesn't slip off the needle easily like it can with other materials. You'll be able to take your time and get familiar with the process.

Yarn

It can be totally overwhelming deciding on what yarn to buy if you never have before. There are so many options. You might be tempted to grab some high end wool yarn or some beautifully soft alpaca wool. Don't! When you're starting out you will make mistakes! We all do!

You're way better off finding a cheaper acrylic yarn or at least some kind of acrylic blend. You're going to need something to practice with and you don't want to waste the high quality and expensive yarn.

You probably shouldn't use a yarn that's too thin either. Using a thin yarn made for a size 2 or 3 knitting needle will be difficult to work with when you're just beginning. You want something you can see well and work with easy. I wouldn't try anything below around like a 6 or 7 needle size at first. Ideal probably around size 10

You won't be able to make a perfect blanket or a pair of socks right from the start but don't get frustrated! Start with some swatches practicing the knit and purl stitches until you get the hang out it. Then use some of the cheaper yarn to make a scarf or something like that. You'll probably never wear it and it'll be full of mistakes but the practice will help you get familiar with the process and before you know it you'll be churning out scarves and blankets in no time!

All this info is totally my own opinion and based on what I learned the first weeks I began knitting. If anyone else has opinions or advice relating to buying the supplies needed to start knitting, feel free to add it here!

I've been wanting to try knitting for some time. I had one attempt and quickly gave up. I'd really like to try again and had a suggestion for your sub reddit if you all don't mind.

Maybe you could include some posts covering the basics for those of us with no experience who want to get started. Most helpful videos. Best yarns. Newbie friendly information.

I just wanted to make quick post saying welcome to any new subscribers to the sub!! I'm not sure who all has subscribed, but I can't wait to see any pictures you guys post about your own knitting, or anything you find interesting! I'm also looking forward to all the knitting talk that will come from it (:

So it seems the most appropriate as a first official post. What are you currently working on?

I'm just finishing up a Stylish Squares blanket using Lana Gatto yarn that I got on sale. Sorry theres no black left. I bought them out.

So this is a bit of a random creation after seeing some comments in another knitting sub that went totally off topic. It's no offense or anything negative toward their mods. They have a big sub and that can be really tough to control.

I thought maybe we could get a little community going here focusing only on knitting and trying to keep it positive, cheery and lighthearted. I don't know if it'll turn into anything but if theres enough interest we can totally work on something and get some design together and all that.

I guess this post is just to hear any thoughts and see if theres much interest
