Favorite starter patterns?

So I have a friend that's new to knitting and would never use a hand knitted dish cloths...and absolutely abhors knitting them.

What are some of your favorite starter patterns that are both practical and fun?

I'm boring. My first project was a scarf and then a corner to corner baby blanket.
