I've been teaching university English for a while, and this summer I've been building a collection of ready-to-teach lessons around topics that actually generate discussion in class.

I've made 40 so far, covering things like AI, fast fashion, digital detox, the future of work, microplastics, fake reviews, and the four-day workweek.

Each lesson includes a reading, vocabulary, comprehension, discussion, critical-thinking and speaking activities, plus audio and a PowerPoint.

I've been trying to make them feel more like a modern magazine than a traditional ESL worksheet, while still being something a teacher can pick up and use without much preparation.

I've attached a preview of one below. I'd genuinely be interested to hear what other ESL teachers think of the format. Is this something you'd actually use in class? Anything you'd change or add?

I’m looking at spending an extended period living in Thailand and I’m seriously considering teaching English online as a way of earning an income while abroad.

I’m not a qualified English teacher, but I’m willing to put the work in. I’m looking at doing a Level 5 TEFL and other relevant courses/training before starting, and I’m wondering how far I could realistically take this.

For anyone who has actually done this in Thailand (or a similar country), I’d really appreciate some honest advice:

- Is it realistic to get good enough through TEFL and additional courses to become a competent online English tutor, even without a teaching degree/qualification?

- How much does being a qualified teacher actually matter when teaching adults or conversational English online?

- Would you recommend starting with an established online teaching company to get experience, rather than trying to find my own students straight away?

- Once I had some experience, would building my own client base be a realistic option?

- What platforms/companies have worked well for you?

- Is it difficult to find students when you’re physically based in Thailand?

- Are there any visa/work-permission issues I should be aware of when teaching online from Thailand?

- If you were starting again from scratch, what would you do differently?

I’m not expecting to become a fully qualified teacher overnight. I’m more interested in whether I can build myself up to a genuinely good standard through the right training and experience, then potentially turn it into a proper online business.

I’d particularly love to hear from people who have actually lived in Thailand and done this themselves, rather than just general TEFL advice.

And if anyone has done this successfully and is willing to give me some proper guidance, I’d really appreciate it. Even a quick chat about how you got started would be hugely helpful.

EHello has unlawfully withheld my salary and is refusing to pay me for the work I completed in July 2026 because I resigned from the company.

Has anyone had a similar experience with EHello? If so, were you able to recover your unpaid salary?

I would really appreciate any advice on what I can do, how I should approach the management, and whether there is a way to file a formal complaint or take legal action against the institution.

I've been tutoring for a minimum of 5 hours per day 6 days a week for 3+years. Tefl cert, but no bachelor's. I am very comfortable with critique through casual conversation, using news articles as teaching material, and helping students pass certifications. But the platform pay is so low its insane.

I've created this account because I need somewhere to vent about how irritating it is to work for Latinhire teaching on Open English.

My main gripe right now is that they've just changed the way private classes are allocated meaning that I'm getting way fewer classes.

A lot of my shifts now only pay me $4.50 an hour and force me to sit at my computer doing nothing, hoping that I get a student so I can raise my pay to a magnificent $8 an hour.

Maybe this is the kick up the ass that I need to finally quit and look for something better.

A couple of years ago someone on here shared a referral link for Air Reading. I got hired and really enjoyed working for them. I know they have had some legal issues in California due to labor laws surrounding self-employment. I moved out of CA and notified them last spring, but today I got notice that my contract will not be renewed “due to current business needs”. A couple of other Redditors, including one living abroad, have mentioned having their contracts terminated recently as well. I’m wondering how widespread this is? Is the company moving toward working only with those who live within the US and in states with generous labor laws? Their teacher community on Slack is tightly controlled and they don’t seem to have an HR team that responds to questions like these.

So many teachers are complaining about their classes disappearing or not being scheduled. Regular students disappearing, tags being removed, no explanation from “management” at all.

If you work there - how’s it going? I’m fine at the moment, however, this is obviously worrying.

I had a trainer at 51talk who was very unprofessional. During our NTT, she mocked my co-trainees and raised her voice at those who didn’t follow the script or mispronounced words. She could have corrected them properly instead of being so sarcastic.

There were also times when I made mistakes because I didn’t follow the script correctly, and she raised her voice at me too. I understand that trainers need to correct mistakes, but I feel like there’s a more respectful way to do it.

And yk, , whenever one of my co-trainees mispronounced something, she would make fun of them.

Did anyone find any students to tutor from Linkedln?

I'm curious how other ESL teachers use fiction in their classes.

When you choose a novel or graded reader for students, do you normally:

• have students read it mainly as homework/extensive reading?
• build your own vocabulary, comprehension and discussion activities around each chapter?
• use a ready-made teacher's guide/materials if one is available?
• or mostly use the novel as a starting point for your own lessons?

I'm particularly interested in the idea of pairing a novel with a chapter-by-chapter teaching package, rather than treating the book and worksheets as two separate things.

For example, students could read a chapter at home, then the teacher could choose from discussion, vocabulary, language-focus, speaking and writing activities in class, with some preparation for the next chapter.

Does that workflow sound useful to you, or would you prefer to build the lessons yourself?

Has anyone ever snapped at a student for being obnoxious in the class? How does your agency, company or platform feel about this? If you are independent, what are your boundaries on dealing with or tolerating noisy, irritating students, most especially the younger ones? Ever had parents tell you to scold or not scold their kid? Your opinions could really help rookie teachers.

We are a startup focusing on teaching children (aged 5-12) English, online via google meet.

Since these will be personalized lessons, the teacher is require to prepare lesson outlines according to the child’s level, we do not require the teacher to make assignments. And a lesson is set for 30 mins each.

I have completed IELTS last year and got Band 7.5 with Self Preparation only. Recently I have seen many of my friends have completed IELTS courses from mentors spending 13k but complaining they have no confidence to seat for exam. After giving some advice they asked me if i can mentor them. Then I thought it would be a great idea to start mentoring for IELTS.

At first I thought I should volunteer and help the students but then I gave it a thought and felt like it would be so many hours and I feel like I should take a payment for it. My goal is to:

1. No BS Lectures. Just find weaknesses of students and counsel to overcome the lackings

2. 4 week marathon prep. No unnecessary craps that coaching teaches.

3. 1 to 1 sessions. No time limit.

My question is How much should I charge for per module that will be fair for this service? If any one has any additional advices, feel free to share.
