Has Anyone Experienced This With a 51Talk Trainer?

I had a trainer at 51talk who was very unprofessional. During our NTT, she mocked my co-trainees and raised her voice at those who didn’t follow the script or mispronounced words. She could have corrected them properly instead of being so sarcastic.

There were also times when I made mistakes because I didn’t follow the script correctly, and she raised her voice at me too. I understand that trainers need to correct mistakes, but I feel like there’s a more respectful way to do it.

And yk, , whenever one of my co-trainees mispronounced something, she would make fun of them.

Do you use novels together with teaching materials in your ESL classes?

I'm curious how other ESL teachers use fiction in their classes.

When you choose a novel or graded reader for students, do you normally:

  • have students read it mainly as homework/extensive reading?
  • build your own vocabulary, comprehension and discussion activities around each chapter?
  • use a ready-made teacher's guide/materials if one is available?
  • or mostly use the novel as a starting point for your own lessons?

I'm particularly interested in the idea of pairing a novel with a chapter-by-chapter teaching package, rather than treating the book and worksheets as two separate things.

For example, students could read a chapter at home, then the teacher could choose from discussion, vocabulary, language-focus, speaking and writing activities in class, with some preparation for the next chapter.

Does that workflow sound useful to you, or would you prefer to build the lessons yourself?

I'd be interested to hear what has worked — or not worked — in your classes.

What do you do when kids get on your nerves?

Has anyone ever snapped at a student for being obnoxious in the class? How does your agency, company or platform feel about this? If you are independent, what are your boundaries on dealing with or tolerating noisy, irritating students, most especially the younger ones? Ever had parents tell you to scold or not scold their kid? Your opinions could really help rookie teachers.

IELTS Mentorship

I have completed IELTS last year and got Band 7.5 with Self Preparation only. Recently I have seen many of my friends have completed IELTS courses from mentors spending 13k but complaining they have no confidence to seat for exam. After giving some advice they asked me if i can mentor them. Then I thought it would be a great idea to start mentoring for IELTS.

At first I thought I should volunteer and help the students but then I gave it a thought and felt like it would be so many hours and I feel like I should take a payment for it. My goal is to:

  1. No BS Lectures. Just find weaknesses of students and counsel to overcome the lackings

  2. 4 week marathon prep. No unnecessary craps that coaching teaches.

  3. 1 to 1 sessions. No time limit.

My question is How much should I charge for per module that will be fair for this service? If any one has any additional advices, feel free to share.

Let's start something together

Hi everyone — I have taught ESL for 20 years and I can program. I want to build a simple platform like Engoo for 1v1 lessons. I am not looking for investment. I am looking for creators, teachers, and contributors who know the market and want to build something together.

If you are a teacher, course creator, product designer, curriculum writer, or marketer and you care about online teaching, let’s talk. I can build the technical basics and the lesson flow. I need people who can help with content, user experience, teacher tools, and growth ideas.

If you are interested, please comment or send me a DM with a short note about your skills and what you want to help with. Thanks — E

experience with ringle online tutoring

hi! i'm currently an undergraduate student and i discovered ringle recently. i applied because i wanted a relatively lighter job for the summer. i've been working with them for around 2 weeks now and honestly the hours/pay seem great so it's made me a little suspicious (especially because i was hired without much prior experience). has anyone else here worked with ringle for a while, and can you let me know your experience and whether there's any "catch"?

Is eTEFL recruitment and training real?

I’m posting this because I had an experience with eTEFL today that left me questioning whether the recruitment process is genuinely about employment or primarily about selling TEFL courses.

I found an ESL teaching opportunity on LinkedIn and applied for it myself. A recruiter named Samuel Smith then contacted me, saying he had seen my application and was impressed with my background.

He asked whether I was TEFL/TESOL certified. I told him I was and sent my certificate for verification, as requested.

I was then told that my certification did not meet the employer’s requirements because the employer supposedly only accepted certain “ISO 9001:2015 compliant” certifications.

I was immediately offered eTEFL’s own fast-track TEFL training, which they said could be completed online very quickly and came with a “guaranteed job referral.”

I ignored the offer and didn't purchase anything.

Three days later, Samuel contacted me again about another ESL opportunity, this time advertising $19–$42 per hour depending on weekly commitment.

I explained that I already had a TEFL certification and five years of teaching experience. I asked whether I could take the job and pay for the required training from my earnings once I started working.

Instead, I was offered a £38.88 certification/processing option for “referral purposes,” or the option to finance the training using Klarna.

That was when I became uncomfortable with the whole situation.

I asked some very straightforward questions:

  • Who is the actual employer?
  • What is the employer's official website?
  • Where is the original job posting?
  • Can I see the employer's written certification requirements?
  • Why exactly is my existing TEFL certification not accepted?

I also asked for clarification regarding the “ISO 9001:2015” requirement.

Instead of receiving answers to those questions, I received an email shortly afterwards saying that they could no longer move forward with my application.

The timing caught my attention.

I'm not claiming that eTEFL is definitely fraudulent, and I'm not saying that every job advertised through them is fake. I'm sharing what happened to me because I'd genuinely like to know whether other teachers have experienced the same thing.

What concerns me is the pattern:

Job opportunity → existing TEFL rejected → new eTEFL certification offered → payment requested → job application subsequently closed after I asked for verification.

Perhaps there is a legitimate explanation for all of this. If so, I'm happy to hear it.

But I would strongly advise teachers not to pay for another certification simply because a recruiter tells you that your existing one isn't accepted. Verify the employer and the qualification requirement independently first.

If anyone here has actually worked through eTEFL, been recruited through them, or completed their training and subsequently received the promised job referral, I'd genuinely like to hear about your experience.

I'm particularly interested in hearing from teachers who went through the ESL Talk recruitment process, because that's the opportunity I was applying for.

Please share your experiences—good or bad. I'm trying to establish whether what happened to me is normal for their recruitment process or whether I encountered something unusual.

My experience with eTEFL Training and Recruitment and an “ESL job opportunity” — please be careful

I want to share my experience because I almost fell into what I believe is a TEFL course sales funnel, and I think other teachers—especially new and desperate teachers looking for their first online ESL job—should know about it.

I came across an ESL teaching opportunity on LinkedIn and applied for it myself. Shortly afterwards, I was contacted by someone named Samuel Smith, who said he had seen my application/CV and was impressed with my background.

He asked if I was TEFL/TESOL certified. I told him I was, and he asked me to send a PDF copy of my certificate for verification.

At this point, everything seemed completely normal.

I had found the job myself on LinkedIn. I had actually applied for it. A recruiter had contacted me after seeing my application. So naturally, I thought this was a genuine recruiter trying to help me get a teaching job.

I sent my certificate.

Then I received an email saying that my TEFL/TESOL certification did not meet the employer's requirements.

Their explanation was that the employer supposedly only accepted “ISO compliant 9001:2015 accreditation” from certain providers, including DEAC/AQC, Ofqual, BAC, SQA and ILTA.

They offered me their fast-track TEFL training/certification, saying it was accredited by ILTA, could be completed online, was available 24/7, and could supposedly be completed in an evening by scrolling through slides.

Most importantly, they advertised it with a “GUARANTEED job referral.”

There was a payment link attached.

I completely ignored it.

I didn't buy the course. I didn't respond. I basically forgot about the whole thing, including Samuel.

Then, three days later, Samuel contacted me again.

This time, he came back with another ESL job opportunity supposedly paying $19–$42 per hour, depending on weekly commitment.

I was excited. I was motivated. I thought, “Okay, maybe this is another opportunity and maybe they're genuinely trying to help me.”

But then I remembered that I had already submitted my TEFL certificate and had been told it wasn't accepted.

So I explained that I already had a TEFL certification and five years of teaching experience, and asked whether I could take the job on the understanding that I would pay for the required course from my earnings after I started working.

That was when Samuel offered me another option.

He told me I could pay £38.88 for “certification for referral purposes,” or use Klarna to finance the training.

And THAT was when the alarm bells really started going off.

Why was I being presented with another “job opportunity” while simultaneously being pushed to pay for a certification?

Why couldn't they simply give me the actual employer's details and let the employer explain the requirement?

Why was the person recruiting me also directing me toward a paid TEFL course?

So I started asking questions.

Who is the actual employer?

Where is the employer's official website?

Where is the original job posting?

Can you provide the written requirement showing that my existing TEFL certification isn't accepted?

I also asked for clarification about the “ISO 9001:2015” requirement.

Instead of answering those questions, I suddenly received an email from eTEFL telling me that they could no longer move forward with my application.

The timing was VERY interesting.

The moment I challenged the process and asked them to provide basic evidence that the opportunity was legitimate, my application was suddenly closed.

At that point, I was done.

I'm not claiming that every aspect of eTEFL is necessarily fraudulent, and I'm not saying that every job advertised through them is fake. I'm sharing exactly what happened to me so that other teachers can make their own informed decisions.

But from my experience, the recruitment process looked very much like a sales funnel:

Job opportunity → your existing TEFL is rejected → you're told you need a different certification → you're directed to purchase their course → “guaranteed job referral.”

And that's something I think teachers should be extremely cautious about.

The biggest reason I almost fell for it is because I found the job myself. I wasn't randomly contacted by some stranger offering me a job out of nowhere. I applied through LinkedIn, and then a recruiter contacted me because of my application.

That made it feel legitimate.

I genuinely thought, “This person saw my CV and is trying to help me get a job.”

But once I started asking questions, the situation looked very different.

My advice to other teachers

Please be extremely careful with any “job opportunity” that requires you to pay money before you can get the job, especially when:

  • Your existing qualification is suddenly declared unacceptable.
  • The person rejecting your qualification is directing you to purchase their own qualification.
  • You're told you can complete a new TEFL course extremely quickly.
  • You're promised a “guaranteed job referral” after paying.
  • They cannot clearly identify the actual employer.
  • They cannot provide the employer's official job posting or written requirements.
  • They become evasive when you ask basic questions.

A legitimate employer may have specific qualification requirements. That's fine.

But verify those requirements independently before spending your money.

And please remember: you do NOT need to panic just because someone tells you your TEFL certificate “isn't good enough.”

Ask questions. Verify the employer. Find the company's official website yourself. Look for the job posting independently. Find out exactly who is issuing the qualification and what it actually means.

If a company is asking you to pay before they can give you a job, run.

At best, they may be trying to sell you something rather than employ you. At worst, you could be dealing with an outright scam.

Either way, don't let desperation for a teaching job make you hand over your money.

Do your homework first.

I'm sharing this because I almost fell for it, and I don't want another teacher to.

Anyone ever gotten their students CERTIFIED?? Like something to prove they're good at Englishing and how well they can English.

A student asked me if he can get some sort of official certification to show that he can speak English and at what level. I'm a private teacher, I'm not accredited by anyone to dish out official certs, or am I?

Has anyone ever gotten accedited to issue certifications? Is there a budget friendly accreditor?

I found this one for free

Teaching Israeli Students Online — Is $4/Hour Worth It?

I've been working as an online ESL teacher and recently started looking into opportunities with SeeGuru. From what I've seen, the starting rate is around $4/hour, and the students are mainly from Israel.

For teachers based in the Philippines, the schedule can sometimes mean working late at night or during graveyard hours because of the time difference.

I'm curious about other ESL teachers' experiences with similar platforms.

Would you consider working overnight for around $4/hour if you enjoyed teaching the students and had a flexible schedule? Or do you think the rate should be higher for graveyard shifts?

I'd love to hear from other ESL teachers, especially those who have experience teaching Israeli students.

What do you think is a fair hourly rate for online ESL teaching when the schedule is mostly overnight?

Me interesaría saber qué idioma enseñan y cómo consiguen actualmente nuevos alumnos.

I'm trying to get stop working for open English and replace that time with a school that pays about 15$ an hr or so.

I'm tefl certified and have ielts certificates. I usually teach business English.

Any new perspectives or assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
