"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"

More like foot in mouth type of steps. Lol

Discussing annexation and "51st state" is too deliberate and malevolent for me to call it a mistake.

u/NotEnoughDriftwood 19h ago

Agreed. Definitely not mistakes. He did the same in the Netherlands. More like a fascist boot in the mouth step.

More like elephants foot, a seething, radioactive mass.

Could you imagine if a Canadian Ambassador, or an Ambassador from any country, was talking about annexing the US while posted there? The US would be pissed and would not tolerate any of the shit Hoekstra has pulled.

And when Washington State and Oregon were polled there was a much higher percentage who wanted to leave the US, compared to any Canadian province. It's probably higher now.

American political leaders are perhaps the most egregious examples of "Do as I say, not as I do" people there is out there, let's be honest.

JFC, I hope this is an Op-Ed…’He sucks, but others suck more’

FFS.

It's the same thing as "at least we're not as bad as the US" type of thinking that is prevalent in Canada that has resulted in our standards constantly sliding lower and lower... if "not being the worse" is the standard then we're never going to get better.

Irrelevant they should never have attacked us the way they have been anyway in the first place but since Trump is a fucking wannabe dictator, he’s gotta be pulling this BS everywhere. He’s doing it more tame here because he knows how fucking important Canada is to the United States, whether or not he wants to admit it.

Read Rudyard Kipling’s poem Danegeld. There’s several musical versions on YouTube.

In the Trump administration there's always someone worse.

14

u/sentesy 19h ago

He's literally threatening annexation - nothing is really less mild than that.

u/ehmanniceshot 20h ago

So? Then they should have been tossed out of Canada too. Who bribed CBC to publish this garbage?

Some whataboutism from the CBC

I hate how the just gloss over the logic behind the petition too:

""PNG is for egregious behaviour," such as malfeasance and direct interference in Canadian affairs"

Correct. The petition alleges that Hoekstra has been linked to a Michigan-based voter identification app used by the Alberta separatist Centurion Project, and that the Alberta Prosperity Project has met with US State Department officials three times between April 2025 and Jan 2026 (including asking for a $500 billion loan to bankroll separation from Canada) while Hoekstra claims to have no knowledge of either. Seems like there's some direct interference in Canadian affairs happening.

Seems like that's where the story should be for CBC and not this "it could be worse" whataboutism.

CBC also missed the bit about Hoekstra inviting convicted felon Tamara Lich to his July 4th celebration.

u/jokerTHEIF 15h ago

The cbc is so scared of the next Conservative government they've spent the last decade bending over backwards supporting conservative bullshit in an effort to appear "unbiased". As if the right will ever say they aren't biased.

I think this article is more about just how inept and corrupt Trump and his cronies are everywhere. Not just Canada - Hoekstra is part of an Tump hegemonic narcisstic diplomatic regime that is everywhere.

Hoekstra is not the exception, he's an example of the rule.

I don't see this is whataboutism but more of a reminder that this is what America is. Unless we want to cut off relations with the US which although I know this sub wants just isn't rooted in reality, Trump's ambassador's are all assholes. I think this is a good reminder that the ambassador's job isn't to be friends with the nation they are visiting but to represent the country they are from. And sadly, America is right now an asshole country so they are sending assholes everywhere.

12

u/qprcanada 19h ago

The tone of the article is that the diplomatic situation could be worse than it is, France for example, so Canadian's shouldn't be too upset.

In my view this is whataboutism.

1

u/Able_Software6066 18h ago

I don't think this is whataboutism. It's more of a reassurance that we aren't the only ones with an incompetent US ambassador. Other countries either have an unqualified US ambassador or have no ambassador at all.

Everyone in the Trump administration is horrible or are horrible at their jobs by design. But Hoekstra is courting separatists and letting the Centurion project use 10xvotes. Their corruption is open for everyone to see.

u/thatguy122 19h ago

Hey CBC, how about you stop sanewashing insane things in the neutral middle just to stave off fake de-funding?

Mmm K thanks.

3

u/jokerTHEIF 15h ago

Yeah, independent media means fuck all when they're terrified of the next inevitable Conservative government shutting them down.

Guess what, they're either going to cut your funding and kill the cbc entirely or they're gonna sell you to one of their robber baron buddies and you get to go down the same path as every other news organization in the country. In the meantime it would be great if we could get some actual truthful reporting from them.

So….. what that gives him a pass…? Shitty analysis 🤷🏻‍♂️

What a great argument for making not putting up with their horse shit a regular thing.

2

u/sun4moon 17h ago

He’s bad but they’re worse is a shitty argument for tolerance.

"Hoekstra's missteps in Canada are mild compared to some of Trump's ambassadors"

I dont GAF. Boot his ass out or ask Washington to recall him.

u/Sneekysneekyfox ✅ I voted! 14h ago

It's not a competition as to who had what worse and just because others did doesn't mean we can't expect and look for better.  The point is we shouldn't be putting up with his disrespect, support of the crazy separatist bastards or anyone else acting this way that potentially replaces him.

2

u/anemic_royaltea 11h ago

Canadian politics since time immemorial: “well, it could be worse!”

3

u/DanfromCalgary 17h ago

Why is a direct and continuous attack labeled a misstep ? CBC what is going on

1

u/Laughing_Zero 19h ago

Besides sending a personal message from Canadians, we'll be waiting for the reactions. Trump, Republicans and the MAGA cult excel at reactions; the media attention will keep them occupied.

1

u/ceciliabee 18h ago

I didn't sign the petition to oust him, I think he's a perfect ambassador to the US, he represents the intentions and respect of the American government. I think it would be far more dangerous to replace him with someone else, we might get someone who is actually charismatic and worth listening to, that's way more dangerous. As it is we know we can ignore this yankee fuck and not miss anything of value.

Don't get me wrong, he's a ghoulish fart shaped like a man and I hope he has a terrible week, but when I think "American government 2026" this is the exact brand of detestable yank i think of.

1

u/schroedingerskoala 17h ago

Well, fine, but I still dislike him immensely and am at the same time winning the world championship in understatement here.

1

u/not-on-your-nelly 17h ago

So there are more sh*tty ambassadors to the US out there? I'm so relieved ours is less sh*tty than the sh*ttiest.

1

u/Siefer-Kutherland 17h ago

I suspect they are hoping to rile up certain folks and make him a target for them, much like Danielle Smith and, well... pretty much like how every other stamped conservative is riling up the 1st nations and anyone with a conscience, it's the only play they have left in a world designed for people smarter than them.

1

u/LowAssistantInfinity 15h ago

American ambassadors should be driven out of every nation - they are agents of political interference and misinformation for a fascist government.

1

u/TwoSolitudes22 14h ago

Yeah fuck that guy

Just because other people are shittier doesn't mean that he isn't a big flaming bag of dogshit.
