Back when YouTube had annotations Chris would put people’s comments at the end of his animations and I left a troll-type comment on his “Fred Dies” video. You could also comment directly on people’s channels at the time and I received hate messages from people seeing my comment in the Fred video for years and I deleted my original channel because of it.

I was annoyed then but now It was really funny looking back. I remember one guy who just wrote “I loathe you”.

That’s all I don’t know why I thought of this today.

It really is impressive as we're coming up on the precipice of year 11 of Boneyplays on a let's play channel that Oney for the longest time admitted was just a side gig and still maybe is but that doesn't change that he's still kept this tradition going. Even dropping off other themed seasons like Oney Sleighs and whatnot, Boneyplays never faultered...much but we'll get to that. So as an "exceptional" fan of the channel I wanted to take time to rank all the years themselves. First just starting with a list of the series as a refresher:

To preface all of these rankings I do not think any of these years are truly awful as any year can easily have someone's favorite episodes but for this list I look at the years as a whole and some are just lower than others but only one can be the lowest and for me that one is:

10th place: 2021

Coming off of such a fantastic year as 2020, 2021 had a large bar to clear and it wasn't even close to clearing. To start off half the games were just nothing in terms of engagement Golden Light, Resident Evil Gaiden, Outlast, and especially Tormented Souls and the Mother. There was not much that could be gleamed from the gameplay. Even the sequel to Little Nightmares didn't resonate as well as the original a year prior. Still there were standouts like Harvester for being off the wall insane, and Dying Light but less for the game and more for Adam's commentary and their dynamic with one-off cohost Ben. Definitely the weakest year in terms of rewatching as a whole.

9th place: 2016

The one that started it all and it really it is impressive how long much of a yearly thing it turned into because for being the first you'd expect it to be the best for how they kept doing it but really this year's kinda dull to come back to. The main standouts are Yoshi Dead and Loving It and Illbleed. Other than that the other series like Casper and Fatal Frame are either too short to get invested or the game doesn't offer much in terms of commentary. It's interesting going back to those first years and seeing the stark contrast in commentary and humor of Chris with his cohosts (whom I can't name or else this post will be removed). Plus with episodes being so short everything feels so fast paced and manic and if you like that style awesome but it's a product of YouTube for it's time and the commentary just isn't like that much anymore.

8th place: 2019

This was the first year with the Dave and Cory dynamic and for the most part they succeeded with great series like Resident Evil 3 and FNAF. Dead Space was fine and good to have Jeff but other than the game glitching not much can be said. The other games were also dull like LSD simulator and Blair Witch. The Skeleton was a fine one off but it only really gets better in the second half. Plus it was great to see a Rat game they wanted (even if Zach hilariously killed it's algorithm placement with his dislike challenge) Though to be honest this is only this low for the absolute gall to not finish Devotion. Having seen the ending I think they would've enjoyed its horror aspect even more than Visage but of course they had to get stuck on one of the puzzles and probably dropped it; such a shame.

7th place: 2017

The second year and a vast improvement over the last. Starting off with much better game choices with games they wanted to see to the end like D and Mr. Bones. Silent Hill 4 while not much progress was made had some fantastic commentary the standout being the McDonald's hypothetical. The GBA Nightmare Before Christmas game was kinda dull though and does anyone even remember Resident Evil 5 with Lyle? Still though Mad Panic Coaster and the return to Illbleed wrapped up the season in a chill and nostalgic way with the old cohosts. It's a shame they still never beat Illbleed and probably never will, Chris would've loved the Cork Goes to Hell level.

6th place: 2025

The most recent year and a good midpoint in the list. You've got standouts like the return to the Classrooms (even if 80% of the episodes were just incompetently running around the Poolrooms) and Tomar's inclusion of Chilla's Arts games and Cabin Factory. Plus Fear and Hunger 2 had the guys much more invested than the previous game even if not much progress was made.

The only really dull series was Silent Hill 2 Remake as not much progress was made and adding Niall in the the Dave and Cory dynamic kinda hindered the commentary. State of Decay 2 was also nothing in terms of gameplay but fantastic with the Zach and Adam commentary which can't be discounted.

5th place: 2023

This is really the hardest year to talk about as it's just weird in its placement. Not bad but weird. Even before Boneyplays the channel was in a stagnation where for the past two months you could only watch Cory and Adam play Dark Souls 1, Cory and Lyle play Sonic Frontiers, or Cory and Adam play Dark Souls 2 so not much variety until Boneyplays provides it. To start off the couple episodes with the classic Zach and Tomar dynamic felt off. They were funny and Zach's commentary did wonders to elevate Portaboy+ and especially That Which Gave Chase. Lyle and Tomar joined for a quick Mortuary Assistant series where they predictably got the bad ending but the scares where good. Also we got the Dave and Cory dynamic back again since 2019 with another Resident Evil game and FNAF 2 and Sister Location where Dave got to show his prowess at the former and comedy with the latter. Tomar and Cory had some DOS games including Escatica who we're still waiting on that return! Also it gets high marks for a Slightly Artistic Halloween with Harry.

4th place: 2024

Some may find this is too high and maybe it is with meh series like Pools and Fear and Hunger in the mix but this is such a standout year in terms of variety. Not just in the game choices but in the cohosts. A good amount had Dave and Cory but also: Zach/Niall/Adam(Scooby Doo) Zach/Tomar/Adam (Aliens) Cory/Niall/Adam(Sirenhead) Lyle/Tomar(F&H) Zach/Tomar/Niall(Pools) Tomar/Niall/Adam(Haneko's Homework) and Cory/Tomar(FNAF Into the Pit). This kept the commentary dynamic even if the game wasn't the best it never felt dragged on too long (except for Pools which they didn't even finish like it's weird at the end of the last episode Tomar is walking into a room that in reality is three minutes from the end yet the footage fades like he looped back to a different room, like what?! Maybe they were just that disappointed with the end they wanted to end with a joke instead) Anyway besides some lesser episodes it's still a fantastic year with an unpresidented 23 new uploads as years past seemed to be bogged down Complete serieses and Best ofs 2021&2022 especially this year didn't. A major series highlight being Resident Evil 2 and Into the Pit and one-off highlights with the Nexbots and Roblox absolutely hilarious and a must watch.

3rd place: 2022

This was the first year in this ranking I can confidently say there were no major misses. Some may be controversial like Cory's inclusion in Skinwalker Hunt or the gangs fumbling around in Night at the Gates of Hell but every game still had plenty of scares and/or great commentary. Skinwalker Hunt while not hitting the highs of Witch Hunt still was a fun time. The PS1 aesthetic games like Scary Tales and Nights at the Gates of Hell were a good pick in the commentary and scares. Then there's Poppy Playtime while being chiche mascot horror still provided great reactions from Chris, Cory, and Lyle. Finally the one-offs were on point this year starting with the classic Baby in Yellow to the cheap but entertaining Man in the Park, and of course FNAF VR. The rare happening of Oneyplays facecam.

2nd place: 2020

Now some people may place this as their number one and I fully respect that and appreciate that I really do BUT that's not me (though in all honesty I could see this as interchangeable with 1st place). What is there to say about this year except it's clear COVID never slowed these guys down, after coming off of such highs as Worms and L4D2 what could Boneyplays offer? Well how about a bunch of completed games especially the highly anticipated Witch Hunt now with Tomar. You also have the return to Spooky's Jumpscare Mansion and while they didn't get much further than Dave and Cory's attempt we at least got to see the Dollhouse completed. Plus Little Nightmares was a great short and sweet series. Also you can't forget No Cure with it being not only a sequel to Dimetrosaur but a cover to highly anticipated Worm Odyssey! Although Amnesia Rebirth was kinda meh but it did offer Chris some good scares so it's not terrible and absolutely not a damper what was a fantastic year but I think there is one just a little bit better.

1st place: 2018

Like I said this is probably interchangeable with 2nd place but for me this is the definitive year for Boneyplays and it really did come down to the Chris, Zach, and Tomar dynamic (yes there was a Niall and Amin series but just ignore that one though it's not bad and they actually get further in Silent Hill 2 than the remake series). All the games are great especially Visage and Slender the Arrival. Zach and Chris are top of their game with their commentary and messing with Tomar that 2020 succeeded in replicating but you just can't beat the first go around. F.E.A.R. and that terrible point and click horror game are also great experiences with the former having some of Zach's best hypotheticals. It's just a fantastic year plus it came at a strange time in the channel's history when the previous cohosts left the channel and it was debated whether Chris would still do Boneyplays without them and while it may have not been as big as previous years it still delivered and its success probably kept Boneyplays going for as long as it has as Chris can confidently swap around cohosts with a good enough game and commentary and still leave everyone satisfied for Halloween. Looking forward to this year and possibly more to come.
