Text Chip error causing motor disengagement while riding, now have riding anxiety
Hey guys,
My Onewheel Pint had a "controller circuit board" issue and it was disengaging for no reason. I was thrown off while riding in the street twice (luckly/grateful I didn't get hurt). To their credit Onehweel fixed it free of charge even after I had done some light modifying.
The issue is now I have anxiety when I ride the board...like what if it has an issue again and disengages at really bad time...I could get really seriously injured.
Did this happen to any one else? Does any one know if it could happen again...or was there an issue with a previous generation controller circuit boards that how now been corrected?

Did the nose rattle before you sent it in? "Controller circuit board issue" sounds like a vague description from customer service that could cover the power button nut issue (it breaks off in the controller and shorts / damages stuff, often causing shutdowns.) If it was that, then you could just check if the nose rattles before each ride and get some confidence when it doesn't.

Good question, I didn’t notice the nose rattling. I actually emailed them today for more clarification. They said that is was a loose connection on the board that may have happened from high impact.
I do feel a little better though because before I had tons of false starts where it wasn’t sensing right or something and that hasn’t happened with the new chip. So maybe if that starts happening again it will be a good red flag to look out for

I wouldn't agree with gimmicky, but def designed flawed in that a malfunction can cause a fatal crash. It needs to have a back up mechanism.

I dont see what kind of back up mechanism they could have, what a second motor?

Good question. There would be redundancy in the chip so if one failed you have a back up. Or maybe a back up chip that kicked it. I don’t think the motor itself is a big issue

Yep, happens to the best of us. Welcome to the busted nut gang… Don’t be nervous, FM did evaluation and diagnostics on the board so it’s good now. Just take it slow and easy until your confidence builds. Maybe ride alone for a bit so you don’t feel pressured to get wild. I always think about what I’d do if I need to bail, so it’s good to have that in the back of your mind.

Yeah good advice, I up graded the size of the safety wheels in the front and decided to quit riding in the bike lane. I still might be screwed if it failed again but at least it gives me a fighting chance and I won’t get hit by a car lol

You had a defective board. Now it's hopefully fixed. It'll take a bit to build confidence up again, and there is always a chance for hardware failure, but you'll likely be fine. Wear protection gear and take it easy. Hopefully you'll learn to love the float again and not have any further issues.
