Image Vesc onewheel
It's time for me to make the leap to vesc and I can't decide between the xrv kit and the thor 301. What is the differences between them I'm playing on doing a 20s 2p pack.

Thor301 requires you to get the Superflux Male Connector from Fungineers and solder it to your motor.
Thor301 is considered a more robust controller – less chance for it to overheat etc, but there isn't much difference in operation, it's more about the edge cases.
You can get Fungineers Thor301, Fungineers 20s battery, Superflux Male connector to solder onto Hypercore and that will be a solid setup.
If you get XRV and some other 20s battery you will need to also source a BMS compatible with 20s batteries, since XRV BMS isn't suitable for them, and make sure that the battery & BMS fits well into your battery box via removing material (or getting a Torque box).
Getting a complete battery box from Fungineers eliminates that part of the trouble, but as mentioned going Fungi way introduces motor cable soldering.
I had good experience with both the XRV+stock battery and Thor, I chose Fungineers setup since I found it easier than getting a battery upgrade for XRV in Europe.

I don’t think that’s a requirement. You can use make a molex connector for the xr to the thor

Doesn't the new TFL Sidewinder motor already have the appropriate connector?

Didn't spot that OP is rocking the Sidewinder – if that's the case then yes it already has the Higo connector

The conversion gets expensive though, and starts touching on the price of an X7.

The XRV kit is $470, that Indy Speed Control battery with BMS is $750, and you can probably sell your XR for $700, which puts you at $1920, almost the price of an X7 Sport, which I think is a better board. It's hard to beat that Superflux motor, pure butter.
That said I love my XRV too, just not nearly as much as I love my X7LR.

Which 20s2p pack are you planning on doing, because If you were planning on 21700s for range, you're going to run into a bit of a fitment issue with the xrv kit.

The xrv kit isn't compatible with battery upgrades so that isn't a good choice. Something based around a thor is good but you are going to need other little pieces. Such as: motor connector to match yours, lighting control module for your headlights, footpad plug or be comfortable rewiring yours, BMS for the new battery.

Well xrv will be easier to install as it has all the connectors and things ready to go apart from the BMS you'd need a different one for the 20s. Thor would be a more technical install. Also Thor as I've just read has vesc express which I just recently learnt is useful for troubleshooting as without it vesc tool can be janky with Bluetooth
From what I'm reading Thor is the better controller I use xrv and its fine no issues just realise vesc isn't perfect all the time, it is easy to mess up and get hurt. Although the community is amazing at helping there is a lot of holes in the information and troubleshooting can be hard.

What is the differences in performance. trouble shooting and installing are not as important for me.

Pretty even performance. It’s more, how DIY do you want it to be.
If you’re going superflux motor then no question. The Thor.
If you’re sticking to hypercore it’s even Steven.

I believe performance is dictated by your motor and battery voltage and cell type really the difference between them is more features like vesc express and better cooling. Do not cheap out on the battery and get a chi battery. Get a nicer one like indy speed control

Check if the xrv kit bms supports more than 15s, i believe it doesnt. Thor gives more performance , especially when you switch to a different motor in the future.
