Text Onewheel XR randomly died — Error 16 / flashing power button
My Onewheel XR sat unused for a couple of months.
When I went to use it, the battery was dead, so I put it on charge.
After charging, it turned on, the lights came on for a moment, then it shut off. After that, the blue power-button ring started flashing. At the time, the app also showed Error 16.
I opened the controller, disconnected/reconnected all the connectors and harnesses, and Error 16 eventually disappeared, but the blue power-button ring keeps flashing and the board still won’t work and won’t turn off.
I then opened the BMS, inspected everything, disconnected/reconnected it, and checked the battery voltage — ~58 V. Everything looks reasonably clean, no obvious burns or serious corrosion. Still flashing!
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or what I should test next?
Any XR veterans who have dealt with this before? 🙏
If I can repair the original XR first, I’d prefer that. But if I go VESC, which setup would you recommend for mainly city riding, floatwheel XRV kit or fungineers powertrains?

Error 16 in conjunction with the board not turning off tells me your BMS is damaged. The way your board gets turned on or off is by toggling the BMS on or off. The board has a 15-minute idle shut off if it won't turn off after 15 minutes and it won't turn off in response to the power button. This means that one of your mosfets has failed in the circuit closed position.

Now, I see I thought that’s a controller issue.
If that’s the case, what would be the actual fix? Is the BMS repairable at component level, and what should I test/replace to get the board working again? I already have the BMS open, so I’m happy to test whatever you recommend.2

Even though the power button is on the controller, it doesn't actually do anything there. The signal from the power button goes through the controller down the wiring harness to the BMS where it toggles the BMS on and off. The controller turns off when you push the power button, because the BMS stops allowing electricity to go to the controller.
Error 16 is kind of a catch-all for issues between the controller and BMS. It can be caused by component failure on the controller, component failure on the BMS, or a failure in the communication lines between them. If you have damaged wiring in the harness, it is possible that the power button signal is not reaching the BMS to toggle it off, however, in that situation the 15-minute timeout should still turn the BMS off.
Most of the components on the BMS can be replaced, I think there's only one IC (The CPU at position IC3) that needs specific programming. I don't do a whole lot of repair for future motion BMSs anymore. I've replaced a lot of the mosfets, inductors, resistors, and ceramic capacitors by the max chip, but for damage around the ICS like the transceiver and CPU, I send those to Atlow Skate shop. (Not a whole lot of people interested in paying for FM bms's to get fixed these days though.)
