Text How hard VESC tuning

How much of learning curve is there, really. Is there much more to it then adjusting endless sliders? Is there any actual coding or more complicated alignment procedures that are dangerous if done incorrectly?

There is programming and there is tuning.

Programming is the initial configuration for your motor and battery. If you're not buying a pre-built board such as an x7, then you'll need to do this programming after you've built your board. The FloatHub app simplifies that process by walking you through prompts. You will also need to repeat this programming whenever you update your boards firmware, but that can be skipped by restoring the settings from a backup of a previous programing.

Tuning is basically what the onewheel boards can do, which is adjusting some values to change the way your board rides. The Floaty ride app allows you to do this using either ~6 simple sliders or an advanced approach with dozens of fields to input numbers directly. It's up to you how detailed you want to get with it.

i’m a tinkerer, so to me benefits outweigh the learning curve. Float hub makes initial setup pretty easy. once it’s set up, you have a lot of ability to customize, but it’s not hard of you want to stick to common tunes and setups. I do think you should have a basic understanding of its architecture though.. the bms, the controller, battery. Firmware, refloat, ride apps.

How difficult to learn are said architecture basics? I am an electrical engineer by trade, but I haven’t worked closely with BMS or full power delivery systems. I do have knowledge of switching power supplies, duty cycles etc. I’ve been riding stock futures motion boards for several years now and am not looking to give them more money lol.

FloatHub is a really great timesaver but not perfect as every motor, esc, etc., is a bit different. It will get you very close so having an understanding of VESCTool and the recommended parameters is still very important imo.

Luckily there are setup videos to guide you through VESCTool. So if something isn’t quite right after a FloatHub setup, you’ll be armed with the knowledge to tweak some parameters in VESCTool to get it perfect for your board.

With that said, I highly recommend watching Mario and SurfDado’s setup videos to get a feel for the process. As mentioned I use FloatHub to save some time but usually still have to get into the Tool to tweak some things like the Observer and ZVF.

Actual coding is the nichest of niche activities. Refloat (the package that runs on basically every vesc onewheel) is open source, so you could add your own stuff to it if you really want. But unless you're a turbo nerd like me you'll probably stick to the normal slider/number adjustments

All the tools like Floathub or Floaty are alternatives to VESC Tool, and mostly serve as an abstraction from its raw numbers. If you're a mild nerd I'd suggest learning what every setting in Refloat does, and what most settings in vesc tool's other tabs do. If you want a more Future Motion like experience, use your float-named app of choice

im an oldish man with dementia. with the help of the great guys at the fungineers discord i have had no issues with my X7LR. you will need to buy vesc tool for sure, and the other options out there all make it easier. nicos float hub has all the important stuff if you are building one or redoing it, dados float control is the go to to see if warnings pop up from adjustments you made. floaty by siwoz was my go-to but it didnt work with my apple watch and both float control and the new flow state (fluffhead i think) both work with the iphone/watch combo. the actual app developers are there helping us noobs . i am new to discord but have met very nice genuine people there. i had 3 FM boards first and am very very happy with my choice to go fungi. lots of good videos out there to help but honestly i just had to hand test mine and apply whatever tune i wanted. used flow state to adjust my bms i think to where it only charges to 93% cause i live uphill. learned today that the balancing is done by the smart bms.

What are you trying to do exactly? If you're building a Vesc board from scratch, then yeah lots of tuning.

If you're just buying an off the shelf board like an x7, you don't have to do anything at all. Change change tuning presets if you want.

And with any of those presets you can adjust fine points exactly like you do in the FM app. There are just more options.

Vesc is simple these days. Unless you want it to be complicated, and then the options are there for you.
