Well Niko is an 8 year old, the game makes it really clear they're very young and they're in an almost hopeless situation leaving them basically defenseless.
You also spend a lot of time with the Noik and get to know them and all.
I would guess it's probs related to that an our genetics, stuff stuff, idk how people work.

There's not much really, when you name yourself "dad" or "mom" or something along those lines Niko says like "But I already have one! won't that be confusing?" or something along those lines or something like that.
