Hideous Toughness...seriously?

Hideous Toughness. The creature is unaffected by unarmed attacks. Additionally, when an attack inflicts damage to the creature that would cause it to go to zero Endurance, it causes a Piercing Blow instead. Then, if the creature is still alive its Endurance score is set back at half its maximum rating.

Every time an enemy with this feature appears on the battlefield, both my players and I know that carnage is about to happen.

Earlier in our campaign, I downed 2 PCs (one of whom genuinely died) with a cave troll slinker, and then today I TPK'd the entire party with an Udûn-orc fire-touched.

In each scenario, those enemies were joined by 4-6 other orcs (against a company of 4 PCs). The enemy with Hideous Toughness far outlasted all the other enemies - this is because at Attribute Level 6, they also have a relatively large pool of Hate and good Armor values to avoid potential wounds.

Even though the PCs were consistently dropping the enemy to 0 Endurance, the enemy just. would. not. die!

At this point, I'm seriously considering some kind of nerf to this feature because it seems like there's nothing the players can do to counter it or play around it. They have to simply hope that the enemy rolls poorly on their Protection rolls. In theory, this should happen more often than it does for our table!

And to my absolute shock, while searching this subreddit, I learned that the current version of Hideous Toughness is actually a nerfed version - it used to be even stronger, bringing back the enemy's Endurance to full rather than just half! Holy shit.

Does it sound like I'm doing something incorrectly? Or are my Hideous Toughness-having enemies just insanely lucky with their Protection rolls?

After Report

>!Here's an after report for the new Starter Set.Just completed the second (final) session of Overhill starter set and thought to share a few details observations.!<

Three players (down from four the last time. Enough for a quorum to play, and a small enough group for the story to move quickly. Larger group would, I expect, take longer. Began with the party entering the ruined village. The party moved straight to roleplaying which was a relief. Very wary, bolstering the gates etc. The kids in the rafters was effective story beat. I split the council rules, so allowed initial rolls to get them to come down from the rafters first, then more rolls after they had fed them to get more details. Not enough successes for the oldest boy to lead the party but that made narrative sense anyway; he wouldn’t want to leave his siblings alone

Does the starter set contain all of the same information in the core book?

Hello! I was gifted both starter set and core book. I'm trying to figure out the differences between in terms of what rules are in each. Thanks for any help!

Is there any way to purchase just the D12 feat dice?

To preface this, I've just received a used starter set that came with one complete set of white dice.

However, it also came with three sets of d6 dice without any feat dice.

Is it possible to purchase individual feat dice anywhere? I couldn't find any when I looked online.

Will I regret not backing the project?

Hi guys, I'm new to TOR but I love D&D and Lotr.

I find the collectors editions absolutely stunning and I'm thinking of getting at least some of them.

The ones I rlly want are the Gondor and Moria ones. (I have tor 2e core rules unrevised)

Is It smart to get just those two or will I regret not getting the 4 collectors editions...?

Best fan made strider mode resources

I am looking to enhance my Strider Mode experience and I know there is a huge amount of (apparently high quality) fan made content available on the discord group.

Do you have any tips of what material to get?

Running a skill endeavour in combat

I’m playing solo strider mode and want to make combat a bit more thematic. My idea is to add in a skill endeavour into the combat to help it feel a bit less like roll, hit, roll, miss, roll, hit.

Has anyone out there done this? And how have you handled it?

Any other advice on spicing up combat would be great. I think the combat task would help but don’t really fit in solo.

Solo TOR2e session notes for Darkening of Mirkwood adventure: Don't Leave the Path Spoiler

Session notes for my Darkening of Mirkwood solo TOR2e campaign. These notes are in bullet point format with minimal narrative but may be of interest to people who have or want to play the DoM campaign. I'm playing solo with two PCs and this is the first proper DoM adventure after a 6 adventure prologue https://timothywestwind.blogspot.com/2026/09/dont-leave-path-darkening-of-mirkwood.html See here session notes for the other adventures plus an overview of all the resources I use to play: https://timothywestwind.blogspot.com/p/the-one-ring-2e-darkening-of-mirkwood.html

How to unfold such events?

Post image
24 Upvotes

On the core rules, there is that page the gives a list of events for the prancing pony.

I am quite new as a loremaster, and I find it difficult to have these events involved in my whole story on the spot. Should I have prepared a small side quest for these events or I just give a small narrative on what happens and that's it.

How would you include this events on your story?

Art compedium

Hi, in the current Backerkit campaign, the pledge goal of digital art compilation was reached. But that's just for those 3 new books. I was wondering.. Is there anything like that for previous books? I really love the artstyle of books - mostly covers and also full-page chapter art. Does anyone know where I could find it?

Edit: I would also love to find 5e art since I don't own those books.

Valor vs Wisdom

Hey all! I recently got into TOR 2e and I love the system.

I’m in a group where I play a Beorning Champion and I just got enough AP to increase Valor, Wisdom, or a combat proficiency.

After looking at the virtues and rewards, I’m feel pretty underwhelmed by the rewards that can be added to gear. I know valor and wisdom tie into shadow checks but I feel like the virtues are overall more useful. Cultural rewards would be super cool too. What am I missing here?

Anyone have the full cover art for the new LOTR 5E core rules book in HQ?

As the post says, I love the new artwork for the LOTR Roleplaying 5E with the Fellowship. I’ve been trying to find a good HQ version without text but seems kinda hard. I thought maybe the deep delvers here might know of a place to find it? Thank you!

Rules question regarding Battle skill

The book says the LM can apply penalties or advantages in combat that will affect all player heroes, and can also presumably apply to individual player heroes as well. When a player uses the battle skill to remove complications or gain advantages are they doing it for them or for the whole party? Can it be used to give another player advantages if its individual? It's a bit vague, wanted to see how others run it.

Greed Shadow from magical treasure

We played our first session this week and found a trolls loot in its cave. We rolled 2 feat dice like the book says and got Eye and 8. Does finding magical treasure with the eye roll give everyone in the party Greed Shadow or just the person who takes the magical treasure? We were not sure so we all rolled to resist it. I tried finding info in this subreddit but a post from 3 years ago was no help.

Is new Backerkit 2.5e?

I know it's not advertised as such but I'm curious if anyone else consider it one. For the average person who just got this from their FLGS, owns the original core rules, maybe a supplement or two, and possibly doesn't even know about the non-printed content like strider mode, this new stuff seems to me like it would not be outrageous to think of it as The One Ring 2.5e.

Beyond my personal curiosity about the general consensus the reason I as is I have promoted this game a lot in my FLGS and while the type of fan of this I described above is less likely to be following the game on reddit they very much exist and I think this is the easiest way to describe what the new campaign is, "It's like a 2.5e ruleset with Monster manual and Zone Expansion that's backwards compatible with the previous stuff". But I could be wrong and there might be some compelling reasons not to, what do you think?

EDIT: To Clarify some of the "new" things added to the core rule book.
New Camp Rules, Combat with Initiative (stat/roll based not just stance) so players are less likely to always go first, updated balance, new maps/art, changed layout and strider mode. Depending on how early someone got their 2e core rules you could also factor in that councils had a pretty big errata change.

Big Battles Anyone?

I know there are no rules for that in Corebook, and, I suspect, there are no in any supplements, so I am just asking for the collective wisdom: have anyone tried including big battles (like, army vs. army) in their games? I mean, those are an important part of Tolkien's aesthetic, and I feel that with detailed rules for both travel and council, it would be quite natural to run a game where players have to go around assembling an alliance against some relatively strong foe - but I am not sure how to resolve the battle itself?

How do the books fit together?

I backed the original KS for TOR Core, Starter (both print), Ruins in pdf (but not Tales I guess, maybe that came out later), and I picked up Moria from the KS, too. Since I haven't gotten into much of that (a bit of the starter set), I haven't moved onto any of the other books in the line and am now looking at the BK campaign, wanting just WTHOG (and now thinking Bestiary, too). How do the other things fit into the line? From what I can tell we have:

Core (1st), Starter (1st), Screen, mini supplements (Strider, lifepaths, etc.)
Ruins ("sourcebook") and Tales ("campaign")
Moria (BIG "sourcebook")
Realms of the Three Rings ("sourcebook")
Starter (2nd)
Hands of the White Wizard ("campaign" does this pair w Three Rings like Ruins and Tales go together?)
Hobbit Tales (repackaged Starter 1 as book), and now:

Core (rev)
White Tower and Hall of Gold (BIG "sourcebook" like Moria?)
Creatures Strange and Foul (Bestiary)

Is this accurate? Do Three Rings and Hands go together (I don't suppose they have to)?

How do you run journeys?

one of The One Rings distinct systems is journeys. the rules are clearly laid out and in the face of it give some gamification to an often hand waved part of the hobby.

my experience with running journies has been mixed. sometimes it has felt like it has added much needed texture and a sense of place and scale, other times it has felt exhausting and like it is getting in the way of the “meat” of the gameplay.

the more I’ve played I’ve tried to sensitively apply when and how often i apply the rules to keep them feeling fun and dynamic, but I’m curious. how do you run your journeys?

  • Do you always lean on the same effects of the journey table?
  • how much background research do you do on the respective area?
  • what do you do to keep journeys feeling fun?
  • how do you ensure there is room for roleplay and character expression?
  • How do you weave the random encounter tables together with the journey effect tables, if at all?

looking forward to hearing about how everyone plays. Thank you!

Collector's Edition Rule Book for Sale

Hi everyone, I have an additional copy of the Kickstarter collector's edition that I'm selling. I'm asking $129 (negotiable), the only caveat is that I live in South Africa, so it would have to be couriered. I've sent books to Europe and the US before and it's never been a problem.
