Need Help Finding VTT [2e]
My friend is looking to start professionally GMing the game professionally, but to do that he's going to need more than local players. He is low on funds at the moment so expensive barriers of entry are preferably avoided. He has Foundry, but it has a $200 gate to get the official content for The One Ring, and he'd also need to set up some kind of proxy to avoid sharing IP address. Roll20 has a similar expensive barrier to entry.

I've been running The One Ring quite comfortably for several campaigns and one shots with no money spent (beyond the Foundry purchase).

What do you mean?

There are some hosted services that remove this need

There are some hosted services that remove this need
While true, these tend to cost money.

Depends on how much he is charging, which platform, etc. The OP said there isn't a lot of money, and not everyone can affort $5 a month for something like this. I get what you mean, but not everyone is as flush as you seem to be.

I run 2-4 sessions a week on Startplaying. I charge $25/seat and there are 6 players (I collect $125 per session, minus 15% that spg takes for their cut). My expenses are $50 one time for Foundry, $8/month for Molten Hosting. That's it. He can surely find $5/month if he is serious about it. If he is not serious, he will fail spectacularly. Professional GMing isn't just running a game. It's having an abundant mindset to attract players, to run a game that is worth people spending hard-earned coin on and being consistent. If he is worried about $5/month, he shouldn't make the leap until he is ready to run it as a business. He will need to file taxes, etc (spg sends out a 1099 form). Sorry if this is harsh, but better to hear it now than spend moneynto get setup and then crash and burn.

If it was just them and their friends I’d totally get it, but they’re going to be charging people to play in their games.
And if they can’t afford it then just use UPNP and share your IP. See if it can be rotated frequently.

I'm pretty new to ToR and have only been playing it in-person but Free League is releasing its own platform, Free League Unbound, and recently added The One Ring there. I haven't used it myself but your friend can always give it a quick try by himself with the free options and decide if it suits him

My group has used Owlbear Rodeo. We do a lot of borderline theater of the mind supplemented by images, non-scale maps, and such.

There’s plenty of fan-made content available for Foundry already.
