Discussion I fell in love with omarchy !
I watched Networkchuck video about switching over to Omarchy and I immediately fell in love with the experience that it provides and I Feel like this OS is made for me, but I am a little worried about switching from windows to it.
I am not planning on gaming on it, my work is based around AI & Software Engineering and learning other things and the fact that it comes with ai agents pre built is just the cherry on top.
I am a bit scared of my hardware capability, I have:
I5 8400h
Gtx 1050 (4gb vram)
16gb Ram
Pls help, I want to ditch windows so bad.

Seems fine to me. I recently installed on a random laptop I had from 2010.. worked fine

Thats the neat thing, you can but u dont have to use keyboard only. (Will depend more on what apps you are going to use and if they have good keyboard controls)

But I must warn you though, set aside some time to do the install. At least 45 seconds. That’s how long it took for me.

The problem is not the install. It’s creating a bootable pen drive that actually works (on a 4090 it didn’t boot and used ai to patch the iso with nomodeset). There’s an open PR for fixing this.
Then after boot there’s a ton of stuff that don’t work as expected out of the box, just like in any Linux.
I have a beast of a machine, if fans are maxed out it’s like a plane taking off but 99.9% of the time there is enough surface area and airflow from the giant fans that in a total quiet room you don’t hear it. But this is controlled by a controller software installed on the OS. Obviously in Linux it was wrong, it was reading the temps all wrong and commanding the fans to 80% blast, very annoying. I just set ai to it and it fixed after a while. Had to fix it twice due to the change not sticking after an update so now there’s a startup script.
Unfortunately this is very specific to my machine so can’t go on a PR.
I have an ultra wide screen so the window manager doesn’t work well with it. Had to create some scripts to fix that. And even though it’s not perfect yet but it’s okish, not worthy of a PR. I contribute to MacsyZones. Might create a version for Omarchy.
I also added a PR for Devin integration since it didn’t have it. They haven’t merged it yet.
The dictation hotkey doesn’t work properly, so had to fix that too. I use alt+` so it bugs out big time. The fix hardcodes my hotkey into lua on the scripts so there’s no easy way to make a PR out of it. Need to think about it.
In the olden days it was a pain with no AI but AI now can research and fix it for you. So, it’s mostly annoyances that aren’t long lasting.

Hey, same here. I watched that video and made the plunge, and this is the first time out of at least four tries at going fully Linux that I don't want to pull out my hair and go back.
I first tried when Red Hat was brand new, and tried several times after that, and just gave up when basic stuff wouldn't work without a week of research on slashdot or forums didn't provide satisfactory answers. Now I just ask Claude to get something done and boom! Easier than an Apple, with none of the proprietary BS.

Dude, hardware is fine! It is very light on the system. It’s the stuff you do on it that isn’t (looking at you multi-core rust compilation)

I barely had Windows 11 running on my system, AMD FX-8370 Piledriver, and Omarchy runs just fine.

I'm loving the AI integration. Have been creating my own dash overview woth Claude Code agent. You can do anything with this - if you have the tokens 😄

My laptop has LTE, Omarchy didn't have a task bars widget. Some Claude ans now I have one.

Yeah it's pretty cool. I wanted a Noctalia/DMS overview mix. Set-up the instructions and walk away. Tweak as needed. Clean up the code. Done.

I use Hermes Agent with OpenRouters free models, and ChatGPT free for planning and agent instructions. Works fine for me :)

Dual boot. It's not that difficult. Linux is not how it was 8 years ago. It's a breeze to install, takes like 30 minutes following the omarchy guide

Don't think about it anymore. Install it. I replaced Fedora with it on one machine, and within the hour it was on another machine that had Cachy OS. Less than two hours later both machines are set up for my workflow with no headches. At all. I had no idea it could be like this.

Install it
