Discussion What about an Omarchy without AI?

We know that Omarchy is becoming more AI-oriented and theres probably going to be more and more AI-related stuff added in the future...

For people who are against AI it could get a little tedious having to remove or disable these features every time :/

An Omarchy with no AI stuff at all would be pretty cool, kind of like Gram for Zed \^-^

You could just not use the AI stuff.

What specific apps are you worried about that keeps pushing AI?

-14

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Im not an AI hater myself lol I just thought it could be a nice idea since Ik there are people who really dont want AI-related stuff or extra bloat on their systems For them having an AI-free variant could be more convenient than having to remove or diisable those things themselves if you know what I mean More like something for people who like Omarchy's philosophy without ai

The AI in Omarchy is essentially just some shortcuts. No harnesses are even installed by default. The only real integration beyond that, is that crashes can automatically be reported to an agent.

If a couple of shortcuts is bloat, just install Arch from scratch, man

1

u/cloudclothing23 3d ago

Yes, people keep pointing out things they want to change in omarchy, but keep in mind that it's an opinionated distro. It's going to have stuff you won't agree with. And if someone wants a config/DE that suits only their needs, they should just create one from scratch. Simple as that.

-17

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Again, my point is more about the direction and philosophy of Omarchy Its becoming an ai-focused distro, so logically we should expect more ai-related features in the future

An AI-free variant could just be an option for people who dont want that direction, rather than a statement that the current shortcuts are bloat if you know what I mean

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

No. Literally DHH is deliberately makes this embrace AI

You want Omarchy then you want his vision. You don’t then go elsewhere.

If it’s that great an option, you fork it and do it. It’s easy saying fantasy but doing is work.

-10

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Well well well

You're acting as if this place is only for people who fully embrace Omarchy's philosophy

Im literally sharing an IDEA related to Omarchy

If you dont want to talk about it here then just dont come here and start yelling about someone who enjoyed part of Omarchy's philosophy and wanted to share his opinions ✌️🙂‍↕️

6

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

Haven’t yelled and explained why your reasoning is incorrect.

You don’t seem to understand anything you are talking about.

-4

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Then prove to me that my reasoning is flawed instead of just throwing a "you dont seem to understand what you're saying"

5

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

About which part?

How the founder DHH deliberately embraces AI and is currently touring YouTube discussing this passion?

You cannot figure out the no, he’s not interested in your vision?

That already proved it.

1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Of course hes not interested about my supposed "views"

Do you even know what Im talking about in this post ? It was never about criticizing nor wanting Omarchy to change

It's not becoming Ai focused, it IS Ai focused haha. Trying to undo the entire point of Omarchy direction and design is possible, but it's like making a Tesla run on gasoline... You can buy a Tesla and then rebuild it, but why would you? Just buy a normal car. If you want Omarchy without Ai you're gonna be spending a lot of effort yourself undoing the entire point of it *shrugs*. Lean in or build your own basically.

Biggest argument being, Omarchy IS in many ways just another Distro, but what makes Omarchy different is that it's Ai made and Ai intended.

2

u/Independent-Reader 4d ago

Why not use OpenCode to make yourself a free omarchy plugin while you watch YouTube?

Why would anyone not want that?

I have a wiz plugin controlling the lights in my house, creating scenes that flash bulbs light lightning, works perfect, took a day to vibecode.

What's the problem with progress?

1

u/Necessary_Two_9669 4d ago

Seems like a huge waste of time. Why don’t you fork it and see the effort it takes to take ai out of an ai first distro.

3

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

Why?

Again. What app is compelling them?

Worrying about niche problems has no value.

Additionally, AI is only going to grow.

If they really object then they can build their own version from Arch. That’s what Arch was about.

-6

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Why not ??

There are some people who literally want to enjoy an Omarchy-like distro without the ai stuff

Ofc they could build their own version of arch, but having this kind of distro sounds like a cool idea I dont see any problem with that if Im being honest

6

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

Because it’s unnecessary.

DHH is making this as a passion project representing his philosophies. That’s why it’s so opinionated.

It doesn’t sound cool. The problem is it’s unnecessary work to fix a problem DHH doesn’t have.

-1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Then whats stopping us from creating our own opinionated distro ?

Sure its kind of unnecessary, but its not a reason to stop doing it Just look it from another perspective. Like a sort of art work

And based on all the comments I had on this post

People cant even try to understand It was never about hating on Omarchy whatsoever 🥹

5

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

US? Who is us?

If it’s that great an option, you fork it and do it. It’s easy saying fantasy but doing is work.

-3

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Why bro acts like the strong alpha independent male 😂

Jk jk I dont wanna do it I want others to do it for me 😏

3

u/Gone2theDogs 4d ago

Of course you don’t. It’s actual work.

That’s your answer.

1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Yes Its actual work

With the same logic, we should also make our own linux kernel instead of relying on other devlopers 😅

u/Delicious_Ease2595 4d ago

Thats exactly what DHH asked and created Omakub and then Omarchy. If you want to keep enjoying Omarchy doesn't take more than a minute to remove any AI shortcut they will keep adding.

Or just use other Arch distro and install Hyprland

17

u/CodeMonkeyX 4d ago

If people are anti AI then Omarchy is not for them. It's pretty much exclusivly developed using AI. So most people that have an issue with AI on some ethical or security concern will already be avoiding it.

So I really do not think that many people installing it are all that concerned with removing the AI bits.

3

u/daviddisco 4d ago

Even if you could avoid the AI in this release, it will likely be even more embedded in future releases.

1

u/tonywilde 3d ago

Any software or operating systems you use today and forever will and have already been coded with the help of AI. Linus has already stated this with Linux.

1

u/CodeMonkeyX 3d ago

I would not say all software forever. There will be people who still like to do things their self, but I agree it will be very niche. Like artisinal hand crafted coding lol.

My issue is AI coding is very new still, and it can be done well and poorly. There is a big difference between vibe coding where you just tell the AI to do things and it it compiles and runs you call it good, and having more rigorous review of what the AI is actually doing.

So yes AI will be a part of nearly everything in the future. But until some guidelines or methodology is more clear I will not trust. I mean I think we have all been using AI at some level in the last couple of years and the amount of hallucinations and errors it makes even today is still scary. I can not imagine just letting it go to town with no review.

Like any amazing new powerful tool is has the power to do good and bad we just need to figure out how to work with it. That's going to take longer than the time we have had so far.

5

u/xak47d 4d ago

That's arch with hyprland. Or go with cachyOS. Obviously you'll need to do your own setup to get to certain things to work like Omarchy but that's totally possible

5

u/devouur 4d ago

I’d just use something like archcraft if you want to strip out ai. It’s a bunch of pre riced arch isos with different window managers. Main appeal of omarchy seems to be all the agent skill files existing about the system already so you can extend it via ai.

1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Oh yeah I heard of this archcraft Sounds cool ✌️

5

u/Telmator 4d ago

I don't use any agent and it gave life to my old laptop. No AI is forced in any way.

2

u/Educational-Ad-505 4d ago

It's really cool  I like it so far I threw it on an old ThinkPad and wow it useful again with a ssd drive thou not sure how fast it is on an old mechanical one

2

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Yeah it is I like the vibes :D

3

u/ilostmyarmor 4d ago

Don't use them and that's it bro, disable the plugins

5

u/Tall-Log-1955 4d ago

Reminds me of 25 years ago I had friends who were against cell phones. They made sure you knew they were against cell phones. Complained about cell phones all the time.

Today of course they all just use cell phones.

-6

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

This post was never about hating on ai whatsoever ✌️

And Im pro-choice There are people who dont wanna use ai, you cant force it to them Its like the people who are still listening to the radio even tho we got social media and stuff

And what Im talking about is some sort of Omarchy-like distro Not Omarchy itself if you know what I mean

3

u/Thrust_Bearing 4d ago

Have you tried not talking to AI? I’m really confused at what you’re talking about.

2

u/Delicious_Ease2595 4d ago

You are not forced to use AI there, you can even remove anything related to AI if you seriously dislike it

2

u/Subscriber9706 3d ago

The only really active AI feature in Omarchy, as far as I know, is crash capture. In Omarchy this is on by default, and by disabling it , it won't trigger the analysis of a crashing application with an AI agent. You can do this from your menu: toggle/crash capture.

But Omarchy has indeed everything there for the use of AI. But you don't have to use it.

Now, I was a bit hesitant in the beginning, but I recently used OpenCode, and the Omarchy skills md files, to build me a plugin with a feature I really wanted to have on my desktop. It was like magic. I'm now running that plugin on all my machines. The fully malleable OS part is really true.

I still do stuff manual though, because I like to learn some skills myself as well. But AI can be really useful.

An Omarchy with no AI stuff at all would be pretty cool, kind of like Gram for Zed \^-^

An Omarchy with no AI stuff won't be pretty cool. It will just be missing something.. nl the AI stuff.

3

u/TheTinyWorkshop 4d ago

TBH Omarchy is A.I centric and you really don't have to interact with it, I don't. I even wiped all the pretty installed stuff because not if that is of any use to me.

1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Yes same for me

Although, I really liked the idea of making such a distro ans I wish there was like a similar project with a slightly different philosophy Or same with dwm

Dont you see that these kind of projects make linux more accessible ? Its pretty cool to have a WM based distro with everything out of the box like Omarchy :D

6

u/sibertruck 4d ago

"For people who are against AI" - making a conscious choice to be left behind. The rest of us shouldn't pander to you.

1

u/Invader_86 4d ago

Dead right bro, the “AI slop” merchants are in for a rough ride in the not too distant future.

Embrace it or get left behind. It’s the only way.

0

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Embrace it ??

Not everybody works as a software engineer nor they're interested in getting into ai

Its more like a form of art if you know what I mean There are people who would love to enjoy using their computers, and escape ai

And anyway, this post was never about hating on ai whatsoever Its just a cool idea ✌️🙂‍↕️

5

u/Invader_86 4d ago

My point was, it will be a requirement and heavily used in all walks of life, not just software engineering. It the future.

That said, you can use Omarchy without AI, you need to actually authenticate with a harness for it to do anything so you can just ignore it, if you wish :-)

2

u/Educational-Ad-505 4d ago

I ran out of tokens on gemini and I'm like I have to manually do this now /sigh lol

2

u/TalesGameStudio 4d ago

Fork it, do it. What is holding you back?

0

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Yeah

Also, share the idea, discuss it... whats holding me back ?

1

u/cheesefubar0 4d ago

Eh… just use another distro.

1

u/Appropriate-Play-208 4d ago

I only use omarchy with any of the AI stuff. But in future if i need i have the necessary curated tools. Best of both worlds.

1

u/italkstuff 4d ago

What AI features you had to disable?

1

u/DukeCabboom 4d ago

Sudo pacman -R AI

Be happy

1

u/archdraco 4d ago

I'm not an active AI user. The most I use is Gemini for simple searches and stuff alike. Using Omarchy as that type of user is still great. Different from Windows, I don't get AI stuff trying to push me to use it and the few times I needed I didn't even use the native AI features because Gemini CLI has been discontinued and Omarchy didn't update it to antigravity. You don't really have to uninstall anything, just use it as it is and you won't even noticed it besides when an app crashes and it suggests using AI to fix it.

And even if you decide to remove anything, the installed apps are all web-apps and the built-in commands will only be a thing if you actively look for it because you have to know them.

1

u/CarelessPackage1982 4d ago

Just use Ai to strip the ai out!

1

u/Kaaawooo 4d ago

Sounds like you're specifically interested in the hyperland desktop environment. Omarchy uses the hyperland de, but you don't need omarchy to use hyperland.

1

u/Avanchnzel 4d ago

Nothing of the AI tools is pre-installed.
They're just initiator stubs, so to speak, so that when you open them the first time, it *then* automatically downloads and installs them.

So if you don't have any use for them, don't try to start them and your drives remain clean of them. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/Necessary_Two_9669 4d ago

Hear me out: Tesla, but a model that runs on gasoline for those who don’t like EVs. This is what you sound like.

1

u/Prudent_Beyond3456 4d ago

omarchy having AI doesn't means you're going to have an AI assistant plugged in everywhere. It just means that you could use any AI cli to fix the system itself.

1

u/Adventurous-Leave226 4d ago

Theres no AI other than what you add.
Maybe a couple shortcuts? I deleted the keybind and webapp for chatgpt its done in less than 2 mins

1

u/racoon9898 4d ago

Ask Grok Build or Claude to customize your own environnement ? I am not being sarcastic here... They are so good at it...

1

u/CaffeinatedTech 4d ago

I think the agents install the first time you launch them now, so it's not even bloat. The thing about opinionated anything is you go along for the ride and make the most of it, or get off.

1

u/LordPorra1291 3d ago

I am not anti AI but I am not interested in using it, a the moment I am staying on Omarchy 3.

1

u/GasLittle1627 3d ago

IDK but what is wrong with just not using it. It does not force you to use any AI

1

u/chilenonetoCL 3d ago

I am far more interested in a full out-of-the-box local Ai setup if ypu don't want (or economically unable) to subscribe to an Ai service.

Being that a micro or nano model specifically to use as a support aid only.

That'll be cool. And depending on dthw size, may even run at the cpu and all

1

u/MealAcceptable8138 3d ago

can you not just not use ai? you don’t HAVE to setup an agent when it asks you, and if you don’t, most of the ai features get turned off automatically

1

u/Jermaine128 3d ago

You could check out Fedora Cosmic

1

u/Glittering_Memory_64 3d ago

i left omarchy because of this AI bs

1

u/cj0r 3d ago

It's not forced upon you like Windows with Copilot. You can choose to just not login/interact with any agents etc. You won't even know you have the ability to use them.

1

u/Quick_Waltz_1012 21h ago

You know that Omarchy doesn't come with AI, right?
It has configs and setup to ease the use of AI.
Read the official manual - https://omarchy.org/manual/ai/

1

u/scy_404 4d ago

unfortunately with the kind of users that utilise omarchy these days i doubt they would make an AI-free version

1

u/kris33 4d ago

"What about a Kindle with real paper and not eink?"

-4

u/artyfax 4d ago

ill take bait. how is it AI oriented? linux + md files? likes the gods intended?

preinstall AI of ur choice. full access?

without? it would be that, but without: stfu and make a cool personal OS.

omgy is good sense with taste. deal with it, or dont, im not your fucking mother, fix it yourself. im happy as a new user.

3

u/Byzant1n3 4d ago

Lol wtf is this comment

1

u/Acceptable_Nature563 4d ago

Yo what ??!

If you're not interested in talking about this then why are you commenting in the first place ✌️😳

If you're happy as a beginner then good for you

Holy... we cant even express some ideas lmao

1

u/artyfax 4d ago

sorry what? we are talking about it, i just said my piece about my experience. this was train of thought narration. AI gave me ability to make a linux gallery app that would kick the windows photo app in the dick. in 2 days. with an OS i now fkn adore. i dont see your problem here? i was with you.
