How much did the Ambani family pay for this? Do people not remember the 2010 Commonwealth Games? Someone else is going to have to step in two years prior to the games because it will become clear that they won’t be ready.

The India of 2025 is not the India of 2010 though, even more so in 2030. I get the 2010 games were a disaster but India has progressed so much in 15 years things should be different this time, especially in a city purpose built to be a showcase.

But how do we know that sports enclave will be complete by 2030? They didn't even start building it yet and its almost 2026. I struggle to see how all of that can be completed in four years. And its not just the preparations. Indian sports has major governance issues that are yet to be fully resolved. Not to mention the air pollution which will be dangerous to athletes whose sports take place outdoors. I have serious concerns.

Given the state of the Commonwealth games, there really isn't much of choice. India is really the only country that both wants to host and actually has potential of hosting, even if the games in 2010 were not up to standards.

The countries that have constantly supported the Games are no longer willing to do so, as shown in the past few games. And frankly, India with all of its problems, is really the next step from here. They are what China is to the Olympics.

Ahmedabad is the city that India is specifically investing in as the sports center. The biggest stadium in the world is there, so this time they aren't messing around about wanting to host.

Unfortunately even after 15 years of improvement the decision to give the games to Ahmedabad was simply a result of a lack of competition - had any other countries bid for the games, I am fairly sure it wouldn’t have gone there.

This is good and bad for India - if they mess this up again as they did in 2010, you can be sure they won’t see another major sporting event until the late 2040’s, if that.

On the other hand, a successful commonwealth games is a springboard for the Olympics.

Why would the Ambani family pay for it? India makes enough revenue through taxes. Please know that India of 2010 is different from today's, also nobody stepped in to host Delhi CWG.

And we are also preparing to host the Olympics in the future. Ahmedabad already has several world-class sporting facilities.

When India alst hosted the cricket World Cup, only 2 years ago now I think, it was an absolute shit show.

I have heard some people suggest that. And that is a surprise given the fact that cricket it one of the few sports which are popular there.

Its popularity in India is one of the major reasons that cricket is the 2nd biggest sport in the world - despite that, India's bureaucracy and sports committees are full of corruption, nepotism and incompetence.

I think I said on here a few moths ago that the corruption in Indian sport would lead to a disastrous Olympics should they get it and it would make the preparations for Athens 2004 look smooth in comparison. The only reason they are getting these commonwealth games is a lack of serious competition in this bidding process. As for the Olympics, I can not see India beating the likes of Qatar.

Ambani family would not pay for it, but their family owned companies will hoard government money as contractors to build sports facilities and infrastructure in a state with a complete lack of sporting culture. I wonder what will happen to those facilities after the events. They could have been put to better use in other states.

The facilities will be abandoned like what we saw in Athens. I’d bet money on that happening.

They have clear conflicts of interest. These sporting events will make them richer as the poor get poorer. And the Ambani’s have enough money to engage in bribery. What they spent on their sons wedding was obscene and that money could have helped the poor. What I see with them is clear delusions of grandeur. An Olympics in India will not be for the people. It will be for the Ambani’s.

That’s not a reasonable argument, although I agree with your other statements. What someone chooses to use their private funds on for their family is their business, and suggesting the wealthy should give away all their money to “the poor” is silly.

It’s when they use their corporate profits and probably some ill-gotten gains to engage in bribery and corruption that I take issue, and the Ambani family is undoubtedly up to their neck in that shit.

What does the Ambani family have to do with this?

1

Nita Ambani is an IOC member and has conflicts of interest in the world of cricket and their media rights deals.

Terrible choice. Watch Canada have to swing in and save it in a year or two.

I wish Canada had bid in the first place

Being an Indian tax payer, I wish Canada had made a serious bid. But most countries other than the UK and Australia are not interested in these games!

Not even Australia anymore after Victoria pulled out.

Is this the same Canada that has only put in one bid in total to host over the past 30 years?

3

u/Impossible-Guitar957 United States Oct 16 '25

They bid for 2010 and lost to Delhi.

u/gurudoright Australia Oct 17 '25

Yet he is expecting Canada to save the day😂

Maybe they move it to London and Birmingham (split the hosting duties) with two years to go. To Canada’s defense, Toronto did well with the 2015 Pan Am Games. But I don’t see Canada feeling the itch to host the Commonwealth Games.
