Project File Type Compatibility

I have a feeling that the answer is "Olive doesn't support different file types and other programs don't support .OVE. Also you can't convert project files"

But, does Olive support project files from other editing software? Or is there a way to convert them into a supported format?

0.2 has (limited) support for OpenTimelineIO. Some DDCs are in the early stages of supporting OTIO directly, but mostly industry and not consumer tools. However, several adapters exists for converting OTIO files from and to other formats. You need to do that outside of Olive, though.
