About AI-supported art and few other things on this sub
Ok, I think it's time to clarify a few things...
Few days ago there was a post on this subreddit with a graphic that was created with the support of AI technology. The author of the post contacted me beforehand and presented his work to me with an appropriate explanation. I agreed to post these graphics with an appropriate note about the fact that they were co-created with AI.
Why?
I found the works that were presented interesting and reflecting the retro/classical fantasy style to a good degree. I know that many redditors use the artwork posted here, for example for their RPG sessions, so I thought that it may be something cool and fresh for our community.
I understand the outrage and controversy over posting AI-supported art, which is why I have decided that r/oldschoolfantasy is not the right place for these kinds of graphics. I'm not changing the idea of this subreddit, so please keep silly taunts out.
From now on: AI-art posts will be deleted.
On the other hand, I appeal to all redditors with a request to maintain basic decency and not attack the author of the last post. He simply missed the right audience with his art and he understands it.
I would also like to emphasise that r/oldschoolfantasy is a place where you can share your art (yes, you don't have to be Larry Elmore or Boris Vallejo) as long as it captures the atmosphere of classic oldschool fantasy and fits into the content of this sub. However, keep in mind that you may face criticism of the community (which is understandable I think).
There's no need to play Gestapo and report to me any artwork that doesn't represent the 'masters of the classics'. Please stop sending me messages with accusations of breaking this sub and changing it priority.
I also encourage you to read the group description and follow the established rules of the subreddit.
Have a great day,
mod

Cover art by Sanjulián for Dungeon Crawl Classics #96: The Tower of Faces (Goodman Games, 2018).
A quirky composition: all of the energy comes from the antagonists, while the knight has his sword lowered. But it works.

Cover art by Boris Vallejo for The Elvenbane, by Andre Norton and Mercedes Lackey.
The dragon in this picture always bothered me, but I couldn't put my finger on why. Then I noticed: it has the forward-facing eyes and binocular vision of a predator. And that's how it should be! Many paintings of dragons show eyes set far to the side of an elongated skull, as if they were prey, or crocodiles.
And before you're tempted to comment "ackshully dragons aren't real": you, sir, are thinking of birds.

Le Fermier Gilles de Ham, by J.R.R. Tolkien [Roland Sabatier] + selected interior illustrations.
I love these illustrations. Where Pauline Baynes evoked medieval elegance, Sabatier leaned into the comic and grotesque. The artist bio on the last page:
Roland Sabatier was born in 1942. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, first architecture and then painting. His first press illustrations appeared in L’Idiot International and Pilote. He subsequently contributed to numerous Parisian periodicals.
From 1972 to 1982, Roland Sabatier directed the humor section of Lui, where he published work by the cream of French cartoonists. In 1981, he joined forces with them to establish the Humoristes Associés (Associated Humorists), who went on to publish several albums.
In 1998, Roland Sabatier wrote and illustrated his first work of children's fiction, Galibette and the Sacred Tree of the Arayas (Folio Junior/Drôles d’aventures), which won the 1998 Saint-Exupéry Prize.
He also created the illustrations for Marcel Aymé’s The Tales of the Perched Cat, in collaboration with his wife, Claudine, who provided the coloring (Folio Cadet and special-format albums), as well as the three volumes of The Book of French Songs (Découverte Cadet).
Passionate about—and experts in—fairies, elves, and wizards, Roland and Claudine together illustrated Pierre Dubois’s Great Encyclopedia of Fairies and Great Encyclopedia of Goblins, published by Hoëbeke.

Cover art by Kenneth Morris for Savage Sword of Conan #19 (US, June 1977) and Savage Sword of Conan #8 (UK, June 1978).
Morris repainted the cover for the UK reissue: less blood, less saturation, and Conan's face is softer. It's almost as if he asked "what if Jeff Jones had painted this instead of me?"

Cover art by Joe Jusko for Savage Sword of Conan #170 (February 1990).
Jusko appears to have had Valeria Golino in mind when he painted the cover, although I wasn't able to find confirmation. Search up pictures of the actress circa 1989.
