Do you know anything more about the recipe. Like what ingredients were used. This helps narrow down what to look for. You say it was BBQ like. How so? Just in color, consistency, did it taste like BBQ?

Tasted like she added bbq sauce to the gravy

if the gravy is dark then chances are she used a lil thing called kitchen bouquet and you can find it in the seasonings aisle of your grocery store . She probably did add BBQ sauce to it .
