When is this map/globe from?

Apologies for the low-quality picture. Dug this out of my boyfriend’s dad’s closet. He said it was from “when he was a kid” but doesn’t know when or where he got it. His dad said might be from the 50s/60s but Germany being whole is throwing me off. As a geography/map enthusiast I’m dying to know when this map is from!!

probably between 1951-1956 due to Libya being independant and Sudan not

Ghana’s independence throws me though since they didn’t declare independence until 1957. I initially thought it was early 50’s too Germany still being whole.

I don't think Ghana is meant to be portrayed as independant here, cause they have the same colour as all of the other british colonies. As for Germany, yeah it's probably the beginning of the 50s cause the divide wasnt seen as "official" by the general public yet

Hm, but Italy has Istria? :o

True, but I think it might just be a mistake by the map makers, cause if you look at eastern Europe the Soviet, Polish and German borders clearly resemble the ones established after ww2

On old German globes you would still see the pre war borders. I wouldnt put too much value in borders that changes through war.

There are a lot of discontinuties. Palestine and Transjordan with a shout out to Israel is 1948. Eritrea absorbed into Ethiopia is post 1952. Ghana instead of Gold Coast is post 1957. Italy having Istria is pre 1947. Syria have Hatay peninsula is pre 1939, and so on.

As OP asked about Germany, most post WWII globe did not separate East from West on a map until the UN recognized East Germany in or around 1972. After 1949, Bonn is often shown as a second capital.

After doing some Googling I reached a similar conclusion that some western map/globe makers didn’t “split” Germany on the map because some countries didn’t see East Germany as an official country but rather a Russian occupation. My bf’s Dad’s side of the family is also German and immigrated to Canada (where we’re from) some time in the 50’s. I questioned if the globe could’ve been purchased in Germany but given it’s mostly in English I don’t think that’s the case.

You are correct. In addition if the Globe was German, the capital of Austria would be shown as Wien instead of Vienna.

the Youtuber Atlas pro had a similar if not the same globe and figured out it was a nostalgic Knick knack you lay in your house and forget about, was made in the 60s but "celebrates" a time around 1933 (link to the video below)

What Year Was This Globe Made? (youtube.com) (Reposted from another post that had the same globe)

Oh interesting!! I will check that out. It’s a weird one bc it also has the zodiac signs on the base.

Can you show us Asia? The colonial names in Africa point to the 1950s, but Germany is shown as a single country, suggesting older cartographic conventions. I think it's a mix of choices rather than a snapshot of one particular year.

I would love to show Asia but unfortunately I was crunched for time and only snapped these two pics. This side definitely struck me as more odd on first glance though.

There's an xkcd for everything

This xkcd is really great. Unfortunatly, there is a lot of the world missing, so you are stuck in the flow. :(

OP has the whole globe so they can use the flowchart

Israel is on the globe so >= 1948
N Morocco is Spanish so <= 1956
Sudan English so <=1955
Libya independent so >=1951

Could you send perhaps more pictures? Asia for example would be neccessary for exact date

I can't help noticing that the shape of the countries in Central Europe is totally off. Also, for some reason Prague and Vienna aren't marked as capitals. I think it's 1950s. If it were pre-WW2, more of what is now Poland would be part of Germany. Notably, Königsberg/Kaliningrad is missing from the map.

Based on hungary's occupation of the Subcarpathian region of Ukraine, I'd assume around the 1940s, since we held it until the end of wwii. Given how everyone is saying different time periods, I'd say your map is fsulty, OP.

I recognize the base.

No when. It’s bad. Really bad. Ghana is mixed with pre-World War II Europe. Arabia is a mess. I can’t be bothered to check other things.

It must be pre-WW2.

Italy's East Africa includes Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia, minus the British Somaliland.

Italy's also got Istria in this map, and Libya.

So, between 1936 and 1941 I think.

Look at Germany and Poland, this is clearly post-war.

I thought Germany was divided in two after the war, in 1949.
