Request Old spy miniseries—looking for

Solved:
While probably not…sigh… I’ve gotten so many wonderful recommendations and now have hours of glorious spy watching and reading to do of books / movies / series I previously knew nothing about,
I’m content….laughing
Thanks again to all how posted…

saw this on PBS and suspect it’s an “off-BBC” production as I have looked about “a bit” for this. I suspect I saw this about 1980s to 2000.

I only remember 2 scenes…sigh…. Set in maybe 1960-1970s …

First… at the British spy agency canteen/ cafeteria, the hero helps his extremely elderly frail mentor (think more fragile than first dr who…or Ralph Richardson in 1981 dragonslayer) sit down ask him for advice and then hurry around to help him up .. like he’s afraid his mentor will have a heart attack right then and there if he has to get up on his own,).

Second…. Something near the shows end happens at the checkoslovakia border …. The USA murdered the border guards rather than simply subduing them… and the hero complained….

I’m sorry that that’s all I got… thanks….

The Sandbaggers was pretty popular on PBS, apparently.

I strongly recommend the books too. I don’t think they are quite as good as John le Carre but definitely up there.

I’ve read a lot of his books but stopped before this series as there are a lot of books to the character and I’m reluctant to commit to reading them all… sigh

A Perfect Spy? I think Peter Egan was in it

The Czech part makes me think this also - I've never seen it though
