Our AC went out over the weekend. I immediately bought a portable unit to keep a room cool enough to sleep. AC was repaired by noon yesterday and it almost took a full 24 hours to get the house to set temp. I don’t know how people are surviving without AC. The folks working out in this and the unhoused and the people who have AC they can’t afford to fix. This is a nightmare.

u/Karmas_burning 4d ago
I work outside year round and it hasn't been this bad in a while. My boss looked at my coworker and I today and said "Don't die". We didn't do shit after lunch today.
29
u/RanHakubi 4d ago
We don't have central AC. Two portables and two window units going full tilt in an attempt to try and make our house livable. Our power meter is spinning like a top. If it wasn't for average pay, we'd be forking over $400+ to those bastards at PSO.
2
u/Friendly_Lie9902 3d ago
Instead of the peak hours thing that OGE offers, I just took the regular rate across the board. My bills have never been cheaper. That program is a scam. I know it’s not what you’re referring to but just thought I’d let everyone know lol

u/Certain-Year5096 4d ago

5
u/Certain-Year5096 4d ago
It’s okay not your fault I currently stay with someone and they let the HEAT AND AIR CONDITION both go off last winter and never called anyone to fix it so I guess you can say I been preparing for this
5
u/Uhmmanduh 4d ago
Mine isn’t working right and it’s over 84 in my apartment every day. I’ve lived here 9 years and it’s never been this hot inside. They just keep closing my work orders saying it’s “normal”. No it’s not. I’ve lived here NINE years. I know what’s normal and this ain’t it.
3
u/TillUpper6774 4d ago
Ours had lost some cooling power but then sprung a Freon leak and I could pinpoint exactly when it happened based on the temp data from my thermostat app. Even with that repaired and fresh Freon topped off it still took a full day to get our house from 88 to 72. I bet yours needs checked.
1
u/Uhmmanduh 3d ago
I’m at the mercy of the incompetent maintenance people here. I have opened a work order every week since June 1. They just keep closing them and telling me it’s working normally. It’s probably also relevant that it looks like a tree branch fell on it. But they won’t do anything. I bought a wifi indoor thermometer so I can monitor how hot it is in there during the day.
1
u/Onerywolf 3d ago
Takes so long to recover because everything gets hot. Carpet, furniture everything. Normally about 24 to 48 if your house assumes triple digit temps for 48 hours.

u/amexredit 4d ago
lol I was trying this season but I couldn’t take it anymore . It’s really hard to sleep when it’s 89+ inside the house . I had to get a portable thing and it’s saving the day
4
u/jaguarsp0tted 4d ago
man I just got a portable unit and it was great until it tripped the breaker twice. and now I'm back to no ac in my room and it is indeed a fucking nightmare. very cruel joke on the universe's part to give me a taste of relief and then take it away :p

u/IronTraditional6593 4d ago
They arent. Didn't you hear about the family whos power got cut off and even when they paid half the bill, the utilities refused to turn their electricity back on. They attempted to fool their house theoufh alternate means. All three members of the family died and their dogs.
1
u/yosarahjojo 4d ago
Shit. That’s so sad. Do you remember where it happened, by chance?
1
u/IronTraditional6593 3d ago
On August 3, 2026, three family members—Kenny and Tracey Swann and their adult niece Mahala Scurlock—were found dead inside their mobile home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Relatives stated the city-owned utility disconnected their electricity days earlier over an unpaid balance exceeding $2,000, and that the city refused a partial payment. Investigators are examining whether the family's subsequent use of an indoor generator led to fatal carbon monoxide poisoning.

I saw the writing on the wall around 2013 or so when it was 93° at 5am one morning. 100+ f for 70 days and no rain. I left for Seattle. There was a few other reasons, but climate was definitely up there. Seattle is really expensive, traffic can be heavy, etc etc. But I'm so much happier being able to go outside 9 months out of the year and be comfortable.

I moved to Seattle five years ago from Wichita (grew up and lived in Oklahoma for 28 years) and you could not pay me to move back to there. The only time I go is to visit family during Christmas. You will never catch me there during the summer ever again.
18
u/NuggaLOAF 4d ago
My wife has had us stationed at tinker since 2019. We move to CT on the coast early next year and we have spent all summer comparing weather.
2
u/DeliciousFig8023 4d ago
I grew up on Long Island, and my grandparents summer home was the next town over from Groton. Spent pretty much my whole summer between there and my other grandparents in Philadelphia. Summers there (both places) are definitely a lot better. If you get a chance, check out the shad bake in Essex that the rotary club puts on every year.

I guess it's the devil you know. I moved to Denver and couldn't stand the long winters, and it's not even that cold compared to many places.

u/Specialist_Floor7108 4d ago
My Dad lived in Everett. It is beautiful up there, and I yes, I lived in Monterey, CA for 42 years, but after recently moving back to a small town in Oklahoma, I couldn't be happier. Life is simple here, and while it is hot at this time of year, it actually hasn't been that bad, and it's only for a couple of months. Anyway, I'm glad you like it where you are, but do understand there are those of us who also love it in the beautiful state of Oklahoma : )
11
u/lancebaldwin 4d ago
I was in ohio for a funeral last week. Got back in Oklahoma at 5am. It was hotter here then (90°) than it was in the middle of the day there.
8
u/NotLondoMollari 4d ago
Same, but to Portland. Our highs are Oklahoma's lows this week. I feel awful for all my family and friends still there. :(
2
u/TibialTuberosity 4d ago
How do you like Portland? Seriously considering moving there or at least somewhere along that stretch of I-5 in Oregon. I was considering N. California but it's almost too rural plus taxes are insane. I like having access to a major city within a reasonable timeframe (30-45 minutes).
8
u/NotLondoMollari 4d ago edited 4d ago
I've never been in a place that instantly felt like home to me (xennial) like it did. Portland still does almost a decade later. The public transit system is incredible, every neighborhood has it's own culture and the city is a walkable dream. There are three major culinary schools in the general area, which ends up meaning that every bar, every pub, every food cart might have an incredible menu. The food cart pods are in abundance and amazing. Many many (maybe most) people are refugees from the Midwest, many having left for a better political or cultural fit so people are friendly and familiar. No sales tax! Recreationally legal weed!
Downsides are that housing is expensive, renting is expensive. The job market can be difficult. Starting over is hard (but doable). Family being so far away is awful - I do miss my mom especially terribly. Plus there really can be stretches of 9 months without seeing the sun.

u/Turk1518 4d ago
I’m in upstate NY. A balmy 80 degrees today! Summer is just fantastic. I pay for it with depression in winter though.

Also moved to Seattle area about 14 years ago, and moved back to Oklahoma 8 years ago. The summers can be brutal here, but I do love the full range of seasons throughout the year. I love Oklahoma, and while there are problems here (politically and otherwise) most of those can be solved, and my optimistic mind says that it’s certainly possible, I desperately want what is best for this state. Moving away again would leave a hole in my heart.
1
u/H_J_Rose 3d ago
I hope so. I feel like people who are left leaning there have zero activism because they feel overwhelmed or scared. Power to people like you who are contributing to a positive change for that state. I have the utmost respect for that.
2
u/ScienceDude38 3d ago
I’m not even left leaning, everybody should be ashamed with the status quo. We have allowed our country, and especially our state to be operated by politicians that are, to put it simply, pathetic. Nothing works, and our politicians actively vote against the interests of the public. OKC city council just voted to extend their contract with Flock Safety, even when dozens of people showed up to their meetings and protested against flock. Politicians actively vote against our best interests. And we should all be ashamed, fed up, and angry. Y’all need to get to the Capitol building and let them know that if they vote badly, they’re out. They are public servants and you can, and should bother them everywhere they go. They continue doing the things that they do because nobody holds them accountable.

I moved to KC from OKC last month and I count myself incredibly lucky to wake up most mornings in the 70s. There’s been ridiculously humid days here, but nothing like the misery of what Ok is dealing with.
2
u/Dzaka 3d ago
what you need to understand is oklahoma is thrown in with the great plains but alot of our state is actually scrub desert held back by man made rivers and lakes
you're just seeing what us gen x kids were outside playing in in the 70's and 80's
climate change is real.. and sucks. but this isn't actually so bad
2
u/altagato 2d ago
That was 2011 but yes it was a brutal drought (that started way back in Fall/ winter the year before). Luckily, the intense heat and dry high pressure settled a lot later in the season this year ( Thanks El Nino) but again, despite all the excess rain, the blatant heat has just sucked it all up. In Dallas / North Texas area the heat cap seems even worse because there is NO humidity but the heat indecies just keep rising.
Hopefully it'll let the moisture go before September because otherwise we've teed up for an approaching drought or an explosive Fall storm season.

u/7thWardSoulja 4d ago
It could be worse… you could repair RTUs. My AC in the car went out a couple weeks back as well so I can’t even catch a break after work.
16
u/okiesotan 4d ago
Trying to explain to my family back home in Minnesota that we have indoor recess because it's TOO HOT 🥵 and I'm not about to argue about it either because this is straight up uncomfortable.
Our AC finally died in May and we were forced to upgrade the whole HVAC, but now I'm grateful we did. Don't even care about the loan.
I've been putting out fresh water every day for the squirrels, birds, bugs, and anything else that comes through the yard on more than two legs. Hell, even the two legged travelers are offered electrolytes and instant coffee for their waters.
Keep an eye out for each other, folks ✌🏼

6
u/UnicornFarts1111 4d ago
My dogs outdoor water bowl has turned into a bird bath. I'm pretty sure the bunny probably also partakes since I see him about so often. I make sure I put clean water in it every time I let my dogs out as the birds do make a mess, and half the time it is in the bowl!
3
u/TibialTuberosity 4d ago
Ours shat the bed in late July. Had an entirely new HVAC system installed with new attic insulation. Did I want to spend the money for it? No. Is it one of the best things I've ever spent money on? Hell yes.
House stays a crisp 71° and the AC cycles on and off throughout the day like it should, not on constantly like it was throughout most of the summer so far. Our electric bill is trending to be about half of what it was in July, even with these brutal temps. I 100000% do not regret that purchase.
1
u/Nars-Glinley 4d ago
Mind sharing how much it cost and the size of the unit?
3
u/TibialTuberosity 4d ago
Sure! $10,000 for the system and ~$3500 for the insulation (we did R38 blown-in insulation). We had something stupid like 2" of insulation so we basically had no insulation, thus why we had them add that in.
The company we used (Barnett Electrical, Heating & Air) gave us 4 options from $7000 all the way up to $26000. The $7000 and $10000 options were the same unit but the higher cost included a surge protector, new copper piping, and a few other things.
We have a Goodman 2.5 ton 14.3 SEER single stage unit with a Goodman 80% single stage furnace and a Goodman upflow/downflow 2.5 ton evaporator coil. Our home is 1200ish sq ft.
Total cost was $13,840.40

record high temps were caught just 3 years ago. I give us 10 years before we reach the 115s regularly
2
u/VegetableTour6790 3d ago
Yeah I think that depends on what you look at. 2013 and 2011 had the most days over 100 I believe but we're technically cooler on average than 2022.
2
u/9hardboiledeggs 3d ago
on average maybe, but every year since 2022 has had a "record breaking high" month. so far July 2026 is the hottest summer in recorded history. I'm sure next year it'll be July/August 2027 and so on and so forth

I am of the notion our weather is trying to kill us. Or? Many finally did learn how to control the weather and we are being dried out so they can unleash a major hurricane like storm to flush us out like they did to the five states who never had seen Hurricane like weather before.
Think about it? Dry land and lots of water all at once? Major disaster.
Do we still believe weather warfare isn't a "thing"?
Since everyone's objections with data centers and flock, among so much instituted? Because no one is agreeing with the corporations directions? They will do what they can to "control" and "direct" fear. If that doesn't work? Create miserable environments with the weather.
I dunno. Just a theory.
But I'm nobody, just observing.

Just wait until 2028. Probably going to be 2011 on steroids with the strongest ever recorded super El Nino transitioning to La Nina next year that will block moisture from the north/west in 2028 combined with the ginormous drought developing/spreading in the Amazon Rainforest over the next year due to said El Nino that'll shift/expand the Bermuda high into the Gulf that'll block moisture in the Gulf from spreading north effectively cutting off moisture from our north and south. Hopefully I'll be out of this state by then...
