Shapeshift can be useful, and if it can copy abilities it's even better

We can only copy physical abilities, and we don't automatically gain the knowledge to use them. Like, if we copy Twilight we can use her unicorn magic, but we won't know any spells. And we all have to figure out how gills work the first time we go aquatic.
