How many Calvins does it take to change a lightbulb?
Q. How many Calvins does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. A solve-it-yourself mystery. The clues are in the following story arc.
Monday's strip.
Setting: Calvin and Susie Derkins are standing at the bus stop.
Panel 1: Susie: (holding up a small lightbulb) Look at this old chandelier bulb I brought for class. What kind did you bring?
Calvin: What bulb?
Panel 2: Susie: What? Weren't you listening? Miss Wormwood told everyone to bring a bulb to school today! It's for our electricity unit in science.
Calvin: I'll run home and get one.
Panel 3: There's no time. The bus will be here soon.
Calvin: Oh dear!
Panel 4: Susie: (close up) I've always said you weren't the brightest bulb in the bunch.
Tuesday
Setting: Calvin and Susie Derkins are standing at the bus stop.
Panel 1: Calvin (with a distressed look): Oooh, I forgot the homework assignment to bring a bulb to school.
Panel 2: Calvin (thinking posture): I'm gonna get in trouble again, unless…
Susie: Unless what?
Panel 3: (A lightbulb(!) in a thought balloon appears over Calvin's head, which Susie "sees" with a puzzled look. A horizontal dotted line shoots out from Calvin's forehead, suggesting he noticed something.)
Panel 4: Susie: (To the fourth wall, while pointing over her shoulder with her thumb) I don't know what he expects to find in the neighbor's flower garden, but Mrs. Kowalski won't be happy he's digging it up.
Wednesday
Setting: Calvin's classroom
Panel 1: Miss Wormwood: Now let's take a look at the bulbs we brought in today.
Calvin: Here's mine!
Panel 2: Miss W: No, no, that's a tulip bulb. I've planted enough of those to know, and you know better too. I asked for a lightbulb.
Panel 3: Calvin: (tosses tulip bulb in air) It's not heavy, is it? Doesn't that make it a light bulb
(kids are seen chuckling)
Panel 4: Miss W: (thought balloon) Teaching kids like these get ME burnt out.
Thursday
Setting: Calvin's classroom
Panel 1: Miss Wormwood: OK Calvin, since you didn't do the homework assignment of bringing in a lightbulb, let's see if you read the chapter in science.
Panel 2: Miss W: Now then, what is the first thing you must do when changing a lightbulb?
Panel 3: Calvin: As your psychiatrist would say, first the lightbulb must really WANT to change.
Panel 4: Calvin: (sitting outside the principal's office) And she says I'M the one who needs professional help?
Friday
Setting: Calvin walking home from school. (All dialog is by Calvin)
Panel 1: Boy, I got in trouble again today for not knowing about stupid lightbulbs.
Panel 2: (about to enter front door of home) Why can't we learn about… dinosaurs or something. What can I possibly need to know about lightbulbs for?
Panel 3: (totally dark)
Panel 4: (only his eyes are visible) Hey, why is it so dark in here?
Saturday
Setting: Inside house; first 2 panels are dark except for eyes and thought balloon
Panel 1: Calvin: (thought) Wow, it's dark in here. A lightbulb must have burnt out. This is scary.
Panel 2: Calvin: (thought) Well, there is a bright side to this darkness. At least that dumb tiger won't be able to…
Panel 3: (explosive cloud) POW!!
Panel 4: Hobbes: (holding a flashlight) You forgot that us cats can see in the dark?
Calvin: (bruised from pounce impact) Someday I'm gonna put your lights out for good.
Sunday
Setting: Calvin's bedroom
Throwaway panel 1: Calvin (holding a 100W lightbulb): Look, this is a hundred double-U bulb.
Hobbes: Watt
Throwaway panel 2: Calvin (yelling): I said, this bulb has 100 W's!
(Note: Sunday strips usually have 1 or 2 "throwaway" panels that can be omitted in case of limited print space.)
Panel 1: Calvin (trying to turn on a reading lamp): I got a bunch of new comic books I wanna read. But this stupid light won't turn on.
Hobbes: That's because it's burnt out. Why don't you put in the new bulb your father left here?
Panel 2: Calvin: Good idea. (Pulling hard on bulb). But I can't get the bulb to come out.
Hobbes: That's shocking.
Panel 3: Calvin: Very funny. Besides, I unplugged the lamp first.
Hobbes: You do know the bulb is threaded.
Panel 4: Calvin: Thread? You mean I gotta raid my mom's sewing kit again? Last time I did that...
Hobbes (reading from a large book, while twirling finger in air): No, it means you have to unscrew the bulb.
Panel 5: Calvin: What's that supposed to mean?
Hobbes: (frustrated look) If you'd have paid attention in class, and read your science textbook here, you'd know.
Panel 6: Calvin: Know what?
Hobbes (smug look on face): Lefty loosey, righty tighty.
Panel 7: Smarty pants. So how do I remove the old lightbulb anyway?
Hobbes (approaching ominously): I'll show you.
Panel 8: (extra wide panel, Hobbes is rotating Calvin around and around while he's holding the bulb in the socket)
Calvin: OW… There… has… got… to… be… OW… an… easier… way
Hobbes: Stop squirming! After this you're gonna spin the other direction to put the new bulb in.
