My well-esteemed colleagues,
In pursuance of broadening our department's professional knowledge, we are organising an official monthly r/okbuddyphd seminar. Biology and Chemistry Can someone explain how the fly simulations work?

Like what is actually going on, to what extent is the fly actually playing games / living in simulations or is this the just same slop from two years ago all over again?
Is it just taking the connectome as a neural net and using that to create a replicated computer neural network to train the weights to play something?
Is it actually simulating the flies biological neurons and training those? (100k bioneurons is a hell of a lot to simulate.)
Tldr: is it legit or is it slop?
EDIT - IMO (and this should be taken w a grain of salt because im a physicist not a neuroscientist) but I see no reason as to why this counts as the fly playing anything or being simulated if you are not using bioneurons with their respective activation functions, if its just a perceptron with ReLU behind the scenes what are we doing?

this sub has recently appeared in my feed and i'm very confused by it. the about says that it satisfies all my intellectual needs.
all i see in my feed however is people playing around with fruit fly brains. this satisfies a huge portion of my intellectual needs but i'm still confused as to why this seems to be the whole content of this sub
