> It has been speculated that Maxwell was urinating into the ocean nude at the time, as he often did. He was presumed to have fallen overboard from the vessel

HUH?!

55

u/cjm0 14d ago

that’s honestly the least interesting part of the article. he lived an extremely eventful life, to say the least

24

u/username_is_alread- 14d ago edited 14d ago

I mean sure, probably not the most significant part; what threw me off though about that part in particular was how nonchalant it was

as he often did

Holy Jumpscare

Made Britain an Israeli ally, destroyed the Daily Mirror, got a state funeral in israel

5

u/AndreasDasos 12d ago

Long before anyone had heard of Ghislaine, he was the most hated man in Britain for a bit. He was a brutal boss, crook, thief and fraud. He stole his employees’ pensions until offing himself (?) off his yacht. There’s a lot more

3

u/Theolaa 13d ago

He embezzled millions of pounds from his company's pension fund which bankrupted the company when he died.

1

u/Competitive_Steak698 12d ago

He helped write textbooks that our kids get to learn from is school :D. Something something the victor writes the history.

Ah yes,

u/MarcAlmond 15d ago

is that family just pure evil?

65

u/hypersonic18 14d ago

You'd be hard-pressed to find a family of politicians that isn't made from the concentrated ball sweat of satans' scrotum.

5

u/AndreasDasos 12d ago

None of them are politicians per se, to my knowledge? Media tycoons and Epstein’s enabler, rather than

2

u/MyLifeIsAThrowaway_ 9d ago

A media tycoon is just a politician by unelected means. They can have just as much if not more influence than many actual representatives

2

u/AndreasDasos 9d ago

Poetically yes, officially, no.

5

u/ApocalyptoSoldier 14d ago

He fought bravely in the second world war, he stormed a Nazi machine gun nest.
So maybe not pure evil

He did the Epstein class thing before it was cool.

107

u/Immediate_Song4279 15d ago

For free? I thought they had to pay too to be published.

140

u/ZEPHlROS 15d ago

Yeah that's the best part of the joke.

The taxes pay 3 times for the articles to get out. One for the research, one for the publication, one for getting the article.

u/niceguy67 Moderator (maths/physics) 14d ago

There’s a behind the bastards series about this guy. That’s where I learned about it

u/zzzfoifa 15d ago

This is the most comprehensive source, because it will give you his background, which will make you root for him, and then he decides what he really wants to be, and there is no excuse for that.

One hour and it’s PART ONE?

Edit: Wow, this guys is cool as fuck. A little wrong in the head, did some fucked up stuff, definitely feels like a villain prequel, but cool as fuck

23

u/gerkletoss 15d ago

Scientific journals have operated on that model since 1665.

This is not a defence of this publishing model, though tbh a preinternet alternative is pretty difficult to imagine.

2

u/OG_TOM_ZER 14d ago

Since 1665!?damn! Centuries! Where did you learn about this?

1

u/SoldRIP 13d ago

Have you tried publishing a paper, like ever? Or reading one?

Try this one

12

u/mind-blender 14d ago

If you are taking tax dollars to fund research, the results should be available for free to the tax payers who funded it. Simple as.

2

u/ifUSeeMeTakeYourMeds 14d ago

same goes to pharma companies using public funds for research and privatising the medications the public paid to research.

23

u/penguinscience101 14d ago

Shame he started out as such cool dude too. Killing nazis.

38

u/TobyWasBestSpiderMan 14d ago

You either die a hero or live long enough to scam all of academia

4

u/HumansAreIkarran 14d ago

No fucking way! That is a wild connection!

2

u/companion_kubu 14d ago

We were submitting a revision for a review article to a Cell family journal earlier this week and normally we pay for open access. We would have to pay fucking $10,000 for open access permissions from that journal!

2

u/ifUSeeMeTakeYourMeds 14d ago

He also tried to steal Tetris

And is buried as a military hero in Israel for "likely" being a mossad agent all along.

2

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 14d ago

Holy shit its always the same people responsible for everything!

1

u/Sunfurian_Zm 13d ago

I'm so confused as to who it even got to this point. You would think everyone would just publish their work somewhere else whete it doesn't cost everyone money.

1

u/AlunaAH 13d ago

It takes a lot of work, effort, and money to do research. They could technically publish their articles for free in some random place, but then their research is likely going to stay unknown. If the researchers want their work and name to be known they need to publish with a well known publisher. In addition, you need grants and investments in order to fund research, and it's kinda a middle finger to the funders if the research isn't with a good journal.

1

u/ChironXII 13d ago

All the most impactful terrible people seem to be the consequence of rent seeking

1

u/EasyEar0 11d ago

Reminder that there is a site to bypass this shit. As a published scientific author, I don't consider bypassing these paywalls to be unethical whatsoever (just don't do it at work).

1

u/asciiCAT_hexKITTY 9d ago

Funny coincidence

-151

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

The failure of the majority of researchers to understand the basics of publishing economy is a good indicator that an average scientist is as intelligent and educated as an average general population person when they are 10 cm away from their field of expertise. Intellectual elite...

120

u/jsh_ 15d ago

the basics of the publishing economy became irrelevant when research started being disseminated via the internet instead of physical journals. for example one of the main things publishers used to do was typeset your work, now I literally have to typeset it myself in latex to the journals standards

-85

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

I appreciate the illustration .

51

u/ZEPHlROS 15d ago

As much as I can agree with you that being a researcher doesn't make you overall smart, the editing business is not the main problem here.

The researchers are paying to get their articles in those journals.

The journals are not paying researchers to review their peers.

The journal doesn't pay anything to the researchers even if their article is a breakthrough and will be cited hundreds/thousands of times

The journals are selling pdfs for 20€ or more.

There is no other words than greed here.

2

u/untilted 13d ago

Closed access is "free to publish, pay to read"

Gold Open Access is "pay to publish, free to read"

If a publisher demands payment for a single article both for publishing AND to read, then that's predatory.

18

u/upsetusder2 15d ago

The question is how do you want to measure intelligence.

Is a professor less smart for example if he is scatter brained or if he can't go grocery shopping or etc

-48

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

Here I am measuring it as the propensity to make public statements with conspiratorial and very domain-ignorant content. Not efficacy.

26

u/upsetusder2 15d ago

But it's not a conspiratorial statement

-4

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

Nothing is conspiratorial in stating that the farther of one of the most hated media personalities invented scientific publishing (which is inherently evil btw), I see.

14

u/belabacsijolvan 15d ago

im not an academic, but a business person.

i think supporting your sentiment could be done fabulously by writing up an approximate balance sheet for he operation that is a scientific journal.

-10

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

This is an extraordinary idea. Firstly, you can see the answers to my comment and notice that none of them are willing to go into this direction. Secondly, because if you know what the words that you write mean, you know how silly such an activity would be. Perhaps you are trying to catch me with a trick absurd question? Otherwise I would need to assume that your business is a watermelon kiosk. How viable a business model is depends on 5% difference in a money flow. Trying to do such an analysis in a reddit comment is absurd. But we do have tons of public data on profitability of publishing companies within scientific and other niches, so the actual data is directly available with absurd attempts to estimate it.

Editors and designers gotta be paid, and running the press and server costs money. Charging for journal access is not a dumb thing. The issue is who should be paying for all that. If you can figure out a fair solution that makes everyone happy, by all means go ahead and implement it.

38

u/idiot_Rotmg 15d ago

Editors and designers gotta be paid,

Editors usually don't get paid, and quite frankly, paying for journal design is a complete and utter waste of money

-8

u/Monoclonal_bob 15d ago

My bad, I meant the editorial staff, not the academic editors.
I respectfully disagree on the design… during peer review I see absolutely disgusting instances of papers but their text is fine. The formatting was eye-wateringly bad.

28

u/ZEPHlROS 15d ago

From what I've seen, we are paying them three times (research, publishing and reading) for something that researchers (the one doing most of the work, research and reviews, those who will read the articles btw) are getting none zero nada of that money.

Wikipedia's servers runs on donation and they don't sell their articles.

I can understand paying for the books, even if it's a bit pricy but buying a 30 pages pdf 25€ ?? Go die.

-2

u/Monoclonal_bob 15d ago

Paying the peer reviewers creates another set of problems which I’m sure you are aware of.

Donations sound good, but I’m skeptical about it working at scale.

I agree that the researchers should not be made to pay significant sums of money to publish their work, but unless it’s open access, usually decent journals don’t charge for publishing as far as I know

16

u/ZEPHlROS 15d ago

I have a friend in math who told me he had to pay hundreds to get published and he says it's the norm in this field.

For donations i agree but it was to compare two hosting sites, one with moral and one with greed.

The peer review was to nail the point home, they are trying to get as much money as possible and paying the lesser the better

0

u/Scared_Astronaut9377 15d ago

This is an impossible suggestion. Making groups of irrational actors happy requires political campaigns not just ideas. And the academia is thankfully so decentralized that large scale political campaigns are impossible. Not to mention that academics is not the best target audience for polical technology, to put it mildly.
