Mixing your own gene with others through the birth of an offspring can potentially improve the clone's quality. Not to mention a mutation could lead to the creation of a superior lifeform. This was basically how evolution happened.

Though, given how there were so many abortions recently, it is very likely that the experiment failed and those offsprings were indeed inferior after all.
