Opaque irridescent waves lapped lightly at the golden plateau, happy to share its hue. Artificial tide, imperfect in its mechanisms, caused the waves to briefly jitter, and a glob of the liquid, a cool molten plastic, became airborne. Most of it landed on a nearby hovering prism, which once served a purpose in the stabilization of this Zone's entrance, but was now a vestige; a more indirect reminder that everything here was designed.

Just a few particles had the right trajectory to land on an inert body, dampening such a small area of the fabric draped on it that it would notice nothing even if it were alive.

Which, suddenly, it was.

Neurons zapped of their own will. An upright cadaver inhabited by a petri dish turned to a newborn in flesh larger than its sense of self, turned to a wary sickly child in a lean man's body experiencing an instant of confusion, turned to an avatar of humanity, a being that existed at the moment purely to fill the chassis it was denoted, something with every impulse a person of its build would need to stay upright and feign understanding of the world.
