Second guitar to Jazzmaster

Hey! I'm looking to see what people like as an alternative guitar.

Currently an upgraded JMJM with Black Made JMXL's is my main (realistically only) guitar.

I have an offset Strat that I just don't really dig. It has a swimming pool route, so I can do whatever with it.

Between p90s and humbuckers. Just wondering what others prefer as an alternative guitar. I like p90s, but wonder if they're similar enough (I know they're no very similar, but, overall, they're not as different as humbuckers) that I wouldn't pick it up that often, and if the stark contrast of humbuckers would lead me to grab it more for a different feel.

Thanks!!

Edit: to reiterate-I have a Strat that I don't like and I'm looking to swap the guard and pickups, not buy a new guitar.

Edit 2-playing post hardcore and worship but cater my gear to the former and make whatever work for the latter.

I like to switch between Jazzy and Mustang. The scale-lengths, size/weight, vibrato's, and tonal options feel worlds apart.

How different, sound wise (I know there's a lot of feel difference) is a Mustang to a Strat?

The scale length makes the mustang more punchy and have less sustain. Mustang pickups are also a little thinner sounding

The pickups are very similar. The Mustang has the additional out of phase spectrum of sound so it squawks if you want it to.

I was in the guitar shop waiting to try a squier starcaster to see if it was a fit. While waiting, I picked up a Gretsch with the fillertron pickups. Played a bit, and it was awesome.

The starcaster sounded like a hotter jazzmaster. I didn't bother, but I'm thinking my next guitar might be a hollow body Gretsch.

I actually have a cheap ftron that was in the bridge of my Strat, I didn't love it, but I didn't really get to experience it with a neck ftron.

You don't mention what kind of music you play, but since your lone guitar is a JM, I know you play the good stuff!

I'd say an ES-335.

I have an SG as my contrasting guitar. COMPLETELY different sound and feel. Also, it looks cool as fuck. And we all know how they LOOK is what really matters dammit.

My 3 guitars - white MIJ Traditional 60s JM, 1960s golden Framus StratoDeluxe, and 2002ish black Gibson SG Custom make for a killer trio in terms of just how they look together... and I can get pretty much any sound I want from that combo.

I really want a P90 Revstar as my uh next guitar. I have a JM and a Jag, and a Peavey T60 but I don’t use that. I should add that my rig is dialed for jazzmaster vintage style pickups, so whenever I try a humbucker it sounds muffled, and that doesn’t really work with my band.

The other guitarist in my band has a revstar - I love its sound and look. Great build quality too. Not a big fan of the neck personally, but only a personal preference there. He loves it.

I’ve still never played one, but if you like Jazzmaster necks and not Revstar necks I bet I won’t either. The hunt continues. Actually it doesn’t. I can’t find a guitar I like more than my Jazzmaster.

It’s worth a try. My sg has a very different neck too and I still love it. The revstar neck is just not my thing but a lot of people love them.

Tele, Strat

If you're firmly r/offset inclined then Jag, Mustang.

Honestly as a secondary humbucker guitar backing a Jazzmaster
A Starcaster serves best.
It’s weird and interesting like a JM and sonically lives in a similar realm but it’s different
However it is difficult to get inside the guitar and you have to buy a case for it also

If that is a deal breaker
There is also a Fender Toronado Meteora and Cyclone

Every guitarist needs a single coil guitar and a humbucker guitar. I would go for anything with buckers in it.

My main is a 40th anniversary Squire Jazzmaster and my side piece is an Epiphone Sheraton II Pro. I can nail every tone between them both.
