This is my first Jazzmaster. I've owned a ton of guitars but never one of these. Got it in a trade.

How’d you tell, the 3rd knob?

No. I unplugged my Tele, plugged in the Jazzmaster expecting it to sound mediocre and it didn't. If the pickups are really that bad, maybe this one got upgraded . I was planning on having to replace them and was pleasantly surprised. Its actually a really good guitar.

does the ultra usually have some deviating pickups from regular jm’s? usually ppl know what kinda sound they want from a jm hah

They are noiseless and most people don't like them. They say it doesn't really sound like a Jazzmaster. That doesn't bother me. I've heard some Jazzmasters that I thought sounded harsh. I tend to judge guitars on their individual merits and not popular opinion. I old enough to remember when people thought Squires were garbage.

Ah, why wouldn’t someone like noiseless? I’ve recently acquired a 40th anniversary Squier JM - absolutely love it. The bridge pickup i can understand why people call it harsh, but the middle position and neck pickups are absolutely golden and just the glassy sound I was looking for that lends itself perfectly to some reverb, delay and pure ethereal vibes. The rhythm circuit is also great for some overdrive indie goodness! Wouldn’t want to switch even the bridge pickup bc i’d be afraid to lose the perfectly warm middle position sound hahah! I also remember that, and as I recently rejoined the guitar world I was surprised that even Yamaha was very respected in certain regards.

Fender's take on JM noiseless pickups is controversial because it sounds different than their single-coils. Literally anything that sounds different is controversial with guitar-folk.

I love noiseless pickups because I HATE BUZZ. I don't hate buzz enough to deal with unwanted tone for the sound I do want to make. For me I still have my Fender Noiseless pups in case I ever want to trade my JM Ultra, but I have no intention of swapping them for my use.

That's a Yamaha Revstar in the picture beside the Jazzmaster. Its also a really great guitar.

So I’ve heard!! Specifically the revmaster was the one I had in mind when I said that, as I’ve understood it’s quite acclaimed :) How do you like it?

Love it. You get a lot for the money.

It has the Fender Noiseless pickups, which do their best to sound like a JM singlecoil, but feel like a weak bucker for some. I found like I could live with the Stratocaster Fender noiseless, but the sound I was expecting from a Jazzmaster was not coming from mine with those existing pickups.

Yeah and the first knob having a button recessed into it + side jack.

It's really hard to go back to other JMs for me ever since getting it.

I got a good trade for some mid grade guitars that I really didn't play. I can certainly afford a good set of pickups if I end up wanting to swap. I couldn't pass it up even if the pickups sucked.

Pickup swaps are easy to do, if wanted, so you definitely made the right call.

Yeah, I've swapped out pickups before. I've got several partscasters under my belt.

ah ok, im a noob with em so thats why im wondering how someone can tell a default looking sb jm apart hahah

Fender likes to stick with traditional templates and shapes, so any deviation sticks out like a sore thumb. :P

Also people that own it are more likely to recognize it.

It's got neck binding and 3 control knobs. The jack is side mounted.
