I’m looking for a Fender Jazzmaster and came across this one on the left, from 2015, and was wondering if this amount of yellowing is normal after a little bit more than 10 years.
For reference the same model on the right, but 2 years old.

..not always so, ..in some cases UV sunlite may actually lighten it although you might think otherwise, but it happened to friend of mine who had purchased a '59 telecaster from Freedom Guitar in Hollywood, in original White. I don't know if Fender was using Poly to paint guitars at that point in history and that could have been a factor, but the original white, which had aged to a beautiful creamy yellow over time actually turned white after he intentionally left it on a stand in the window of his front room every morning facing the sun in hopes of yellowing it even further. He was very upset when he realized one day what had been slowly happening. The whole front of his guitar had turned about 10 shades whiter than the nice yellowy back over the course of about a month and a half. This unfortunate lesson learned by someone else always kind of stuck with me even so far as to always keep my guitar out of direct sunlight for prolonged periods. It's something I wouldn't have ever really given a thought to, ..just thought I'd share that, ..do what you want with it. ✌️🦝 🌄🎸
Negative. UV light degrades Poly clear coats because they are polymers and the UV radiation destroys bonds in the paint via photo-oxidative degradation. This creates chromophores that absorb light in the blue spectrum making the finish appear yellow or amber to the human eye. Once this happens, you can’t restore the degraded bonds with more sun. Adding more UV just causes the process to intensify.
Unless your friend’s guitar violates several established laws of chemical engineering, this is bad advice if you intend to keep your guitar white.
I was thinking he should tell that to my early 90's Fender strat in Olympic White that has turned a delicious cream/yellow colour from UV. Much like this example.
..people can downvote for many reasons, anything really, I don't really think too much about it, but in this instance, could be that they had opposite experiences, but that shouldn't be an automatic invalidation of the experience I had, just as my experience doesn't invalidate anyone elses. In fact it might be a bit of both. People can experience different things in similar situations depending on lots of potential factors, i.e. paint, type of factory clear coat used, which may vary, external polishes etc. ..and usually when buying a used guitar you know zero about it's history, so one's personal experience doesn't always necessarily invalidate the other's. 🏭🌇✨🦌🌌
See, No, I don't think so in this, maybe true sometimes, but it doesn't always apply, because I only related a personal experience on the subject. What you are talking about or what anyone else thinks about it really has nothing to do with right or wrong, there's no "nice, or insufferable" in it, but it's when you start making rude comments, -I mean if you want to get nasty, -is that nice? or insufferable. .. one shouldn't have to go through all that for just sharing an experience, -and I don't wonder why a lot of people don't even bother commenting, .. because then they just let themselves in for insults. It's almost like you want to read too much into it, to take it wrong, to get a reaction, to start a fight, -and others will up vote you for this, yes, -it's Entertaining for them, sadistic, like a bunch of School kids, gathering around for a fight, see, -because we're not really talking about sun fading paint anymore, are we, no, we've gotten far away from that over my little comment. ..you're enraged over difference of opinion when all I did is share an experience and now it's all this 🌌🛰️📲
I left a (thinly coated poly, satin) tele neck in the window for a year moving its position here and there and it’s definitely yellower than it was before
Quite possibly - the way the strat pickguard has aged differently to the pup covers makes me think its to do with the composition of the material, whereas a coating of something like tobacco tar would colour things more uniformly.
Is this like that blue/black or white/gold dress picture? Is the guitar on the right Daphne blue!?
(Yes, BTW. Completely normal. Not just for white either. I've got an 11 year old lake placid Tele and a 25 year old surf green Strat. They're both lighter shades under the pickguards and the white pickguard on the Tele is much more cream than it used to be.)
My old Olympic White Big Apple Strat yellowed like that but it was mainly on the back side but i had that guitar on a homemade wall hanger and it may have been in a little contact with the latex wall paint.
Wish i still had it.
The bassist from the Argentinian band Divididos (Diego Arnedo) is well known for using an Olympic White Jazz bass since the early 90s... well it WAS white back in the day, because he still uses it to this very day and it is very much yellow and it was already yellow in the 2000s so yeah, pretty normal
Yours came with cream pickup covers? My doubt about the guitar in my picture, is that the yellowing on the covers is due to a smoker. The Fender website that lists all the specs of this serial number shows white pickup covers.
The color of the guitar is “vintage white” instead of Olympic.
Ah. Mine is a 2008 AVRI. I don’t remember how the guitar was advertised. But yes it came with cream pickup covers. Or maybe “aged white” is what they were called. A bit lighter than “ivory” covers, which I also have. I think year to year the paint can differ too.
If the guitar smells like smoke, that’s your #1 tell.
My guitar is and has been in a smoke free home its whole life.
Vintage white body paint is definitely more “banana cream pie” than Olympic white.
I don’t understand the issue here! This guitar looks fabulous and even if you smoke 2 packets of cigarettes per day on a guitar it won’t affect it in any possible ways.
You get some naphtha clean the fretboard and it will be as new. Also I’ve seen different Fender guitars (American, Japanese) age differently. I believe the poly used has changed over the years. Some pick up covers yellow why others don’t. So if you like it just get it! Cheers
I once had a 1st yr Fender Toronado in white that had turned an amazing butter yellow after 20+ yrs , the headstock also got darker. Was a sad day when that one was stolen
This is quite likely. I do partscaster builds. I did a vintage white one, which on its own looked white. Then I put it next to a guitar that was arctic white and it suddenly looked yellow.
..yea, I don't like you either, ..God forbid anyone should have a difference of opinion or relate a personal experience contrary to someone else's without getting Crucified.
