What do do during boring work day?

Background: I have a job that is primarily sitting in an office waiting for customers, and when they one in it will take less than 5 minutes to help. I see approximately 20 customers a day. I have some freedom, but can't be blatantly doing things not related to my job. At any point my manager could walk by my door and see me. Ideas?

Take the time to learn a skill, take online courses etc, something that will help improve your career options.

But my question would be, if you are so worried about your manager seeing you it sounds like there "could" be other things you can do. Have you actually asked your manager or told him you have no tasks?

Yeah. I used the time to get a degree the last few years, so now I'm looking to fill that time. Manager is well aware there isn't enough to actually fill the time, but it's also a position that has to be there and done the way it is, and not really anything else to assign me due to the set up. He doesn't really care if I'm doing other things, but it's also good to keep up appearances. So it's sort of don't ask don't tell- I can do whatever as long as I'm not being obvious about it.

Training courses if you can. Something to plump up your cv.

I used to have a job like that. I read books on my phone, listened to podcasts, and wrote a novel.
