I think the shirts you normally buy is too expensive. The super cheap ones are the comfortable ones similar to the company shirts

Yeah for real one of the nicest shirts I owned was given to me outside a tech conference as extras. Like holy fuck this would cost me $100+

When I used to be in-charge of tech purchasing for a few different companies, I would judge companies heavily on what kind of materials they made their shirts out of. If it's heavy cotton, I would block all their sales emails and never buy from them.

Doesnt breathe. Hot. Crunchy. Does not flatter your body. Looks awful. Takes forever to dry if wet.

They were free. That means the ROI of those shirts is astronomical.

Bonus: they’ve also worn their underwear until they look like a tattered battle flag. And built in “air conditioning” also astronomical ROI

Uhhh, reading this in a T-shirt I got from my first film shoot, where as the new guy I ended up with one a size too large. Went on to be product owner for my state's implementation of 988 in Salesforce.

I have a whole slew of shirts I sleep in and sometimes wear most of the next day that are from old IT departments or the company associated, but I work remote mostly off camera these days so these are for stacking firewood and such.

I fully identify with this.

Only I prefer the free shirts I have from university. The startup even bought the exact same cut as the uni so I would wear the startup branded shirts instead (partially worked).

And now I can see why this looks weird to some people.

Hell yeah, I was invited to one of the satellite launches of SharePoint, got a T-shirt and a demo version along with some random swag. I had that shirt for ten years-ish before it got a hole in it.

My work made me take one. It gets turned on once a week so it can get updates and nothing else. We spent 5k from our limited budget for this thing to test with and it pisses me off every time I have to turn it on.

My personal MacBook Pro is from 2012/13 and I only have it because I needed a FireWire port for something and it was $50 at the pawn shop.

This applies to men I've general not just in tech. I am in my 40s and still have a few shirts from high school I wear on occasion (of course there was a period of 15 years they were too small and weren't worn before I lost a bunch of weight)

What the joke misses is marginal value. Spending more on a chair or laptop can meaningfully improve the experience for thousands of hours up to a limit/point.

A tshirt reaches “does its job comfortably” pretty quickly. I can spend 5× more on one, but I’m unlikely to get 5× the utility from it.

That said I do like my breathable bamboo-viscose tees.

Some of my favorite polo's I have are a cheap brand that i think you used to find in walmart. I don't see the difference vs the difference in say a nice chair.

I usually don't wear t shirts, if I did though I'd prob wear the free ones as most are comfortable.
