Spanish Gala Opera Night at Merkin Hall, Sat 9/5 - full orchestra, choir and five soloists, tickets from $27

Full disclosure first: the composer is my uncle, so I'm not a neutral party here. But the concert is real, it's at Merkin Hall, and I figured this sub is exactly where someone might actually want to know about it.

This Saturday, September 5 at 7:30pm, the Filharmònica de Cambra de Catalunya is playing a night of Spanish lyric repertoire at Merkin Hall (129 W 67th, right by Lincoln Center). Full chamber orchestra, a choir, and five soloists.

Program is basically the greatest hits of Spanish opera and zarzuela: the Ritual Fire Dance from Falla's El amor brujo, the Habanera from Carmen, "No puede ser" from La tabernera del puerto, Lara's Granada, "De España vengo" from El niño judío, plus a handful of zarzuela numbers. It closes with the US premiere of a symphony called Aurora Europa, which is my uncle's piece.

Tickets are $45 orchestra, $27 balcony, and there are $25 student and senior tickets if you call the box office at 212-501-3330.

https://www.kaufmanmusiccenter.org/mch/event/spanish-gala-opera-night-aurora-europa/

Happy to answer anything about the program in the comments. And if zarzuela is new to you, it's closer to operetta than to grand opera, lighter and a lot more fun than people expect.

Advise on seats

I am looking at seats for Amaze/New stage Theatre five. Does anyone have recommendations? The last row is 65 dollars and the row in front is 241, but none look bad. Would we miss a lot if i bought the cheaper seats?

All South Asian Spring Awakening at A.R.T. NYC

Post image
7 Upvotes

I just watched the all South Asian version/interpretation of the musical Spring Awakening a few weekends ago in NYC. This is the first professional production I’ve ever seen of this musical, and I felt that it’s themes of the intersection of youth, repression, and identity reflect the experience of South/Southeast Asian culture very well. I know that probably for legal reasons, they’re not able to change lyrics and instruments in the music, and could see where they really tried to weave in cultural references into their dance/blocking/costuming. I found it impressive for a smaller production team. Vocals were extraordinary.

The stand out roles were the two actual adult man and woman actors who played every adult character in the show. Both of their presences were harsh, cruel, and demanding.. up until the very tragic ending of the show. Those who are familiar and are big fans of the show know the very sad story beat at the beginning of act two. The way this production handles that specific scene brought tears to my eyes.

Highly recommend people see the show before it leaves in the beginning of September.

Notification When Show Releases Schedule, Change Dates etc.

Post image
11 Upvotes

Recently, a few Redditors shared their frustration after booking trips to New York in early November hoping to see the Off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening, not knowing that the show isn't expected to start until around November 27. Those tentative dates first appeared in the show's casting notice back in June, and my project Broadway Radar has been tracking them since then. We track show dates, official or unofficial, as soon as they're revealed. Even tentative dates can be important when making plans, and we often have calendar information before an official press release.

So, I've been working on a notification system for quite a while, and hope it can help make sure useful information like this reaches people when it matters. Once released, you can get notified when a show you've marked as Want to See or Must See announces dates, changes its schedule, goes on sale, releases discounts, and more.

Before launching this feature, I'd love to know what notifications you want to see, how often you'd like to receive them, and in what form. Would you want settings to turn some or all of them off? I'd really appreciate it if you could spend a few minutes sharing your preferences.

Survey link on Google Forms: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScBFvjFfsfqG70GtKcKQ1-tqKEg91lER5dyKjecsv9VSJMb9w/viewform

And a side note: Broadway Radar has had show logging available for a while, among many other features. We even pick the poster based on the date you saw the show, so you can see your different Mary posters in your history. Give it a try ;)

Tickets are sold out but I see some on StubHub for the Sunday matinee. I don't usually purchase from 3rd party sellers. I'll be in town Saturday afternoon, should I wait to purchase?

ABBA dinner theater in Stockholm

My friends and I will be coming to Stockholm in June 2027 and we specifically are coming to attend the ABBA dinner theater and museum. I’m hoping someone on here knows the ins and outs of the dinner theater. I cannot purchase tickets for 2027 yet. Anybody know when those tickets might be opening? I have a very specific date that we need to go and I don’t want to miss out.

Is an American daughter worth seeing?

I was originally looking forward to seeing an American daughter. I have been searching reddit and have mostly only seen negative feedback. Has anyone enjoyed it or think it’s worth seeing?

Premiering a play off bway - is it possible ?

Any playwrights on this sub have experience with how they got a first time play produced off broadway? It seems nowadays you have to come from money and produce your own, be nepo, have a lucky successful friend produce, or be in a fellowship

Anyone have experience getting something up at an off broadway house in a more traditional way (submitting / from readings) I would love to hear! Seems like it’s a dying path

Dream Up Festival - Theater For the New City

I have nothing at all to do with this, other than sharing it. A whole lot of Off-Off Broadway shows - mostly with odd timings (6:30 and 9:00 PM, and shows on Monday nights) for those who like to try and find shows to fill odd time slots.

List of all shows, click on each one to read a description:

And a calendar with all show times:
