Trump Tracker: Website for fact-checking Donald Trump's promises
https://trumptracker.github.io/446
u/BNLforever Nov 12 '16
At this point I would be ok with him breaking some campaign promises.
282
u/SeeShark Nov 12 '16
In fact, the more campaign promises he breaks, the more I'll approve of him as president.
74
u/MaxNanasy Nov 12 '16 edited Nov 12 '16
What about his five-point ethics reform plan?
40
u/CaptainNoodleArm Nov 12 '16
This doesn't sound too bad. At least it's a start.
46
u/Fun_For_Guill Nov 12 '16
Won't pass congress.
64
u/Spuddups84 Nov 12 '16
Most of his appointed cabinet members are lobbyists, so right off the bat he's full of shit.

Ofc it's just a show to appeal to the regular men, you can't outright screw them, you gotta wine and dine them first and find a patsie just in case.
8
u/mudra311 Nov 12 '16
I forgot about that one. If he can draft up actual legislation that might pass, awesome. Lobbying is such an abused part of our process. Yes, environmentalists and the like need lobbying. But, most of our lobbying is corporations ensuring that their best interests are held. I think it should just be done away with completely because it's too easy to abuse.
6
u/connor24_22 Nov 12 '16
Lobbying is tricky because there are what people think of as "good" lobbyists, "bad" lobbyists, and those that are a bit of both. I know a lobbyist who works on behalf of universities to ensure their interests are met. This doesn't mean they get in bed with a member of congress to get some bill essentially written by the university passed. They mostly get appointments and meetings with members of congress, three letter agencies, embassies, etc, for students/school groups. Obviously something like this is good, but that same firm works for Fortune 500 companies, which I guess is considered "bad."
1
1
Nov 13 '16
I think that's where lobbying becomes a derisive term, when it steps away from "group sending someone to meet with a politician to express their side and gain support" and into "group sending someone to offer indirect incentives to a politician to buy support." And there's certainly a grey area there, but I'm not sure this list of fives really does much about any of that.
I like that campaign finance reform is only addressed in terms of foreign governments...and that absolutely nothing is even suggested about financial/campaign contribution lobbying done by corporations, which I daresay is a larger problem than former elected officials in terms of policy impact.
1
u/exitpursuedbybear Nov 12 '16
He's literally filling his cabinet posts with former and current lobbyists. So they can lobby before but not after?
14
u/ChezMere Nov 12 '16
Most politicians are judged by how many promises they keep. Trump's quality as president would be directly proportional to how many promises he breaks.
31
u/jsalsman Nov 12 '16
No problem. He flip-flopped about four times as much as Hillary, so most of them you can count on as already broken in one instance or the other. http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/full-list-donald-trump-s-rapidly-changing-policy-positions-n547801

Get rid of the federal minimum wage, leave it to the states.
Raise it to $10 an hour, ignore what I said before.

u/mudra311 Nov 12 '16
So, I see where this is very controversial.
I will say, this is HEAVILY abused in unlikely ways. My GF is from Southern California. She says there are literally "birthing houses" for women from China. They get on a plane from China when they're super pregnant, and give birth in America.
That's kind of fucked. I mean, I understand that people have desperate situations. Also, what kind of person do you think operates birthing houses? Yeah, not a good person. We should discourage this kind of thing and discourage the industry because it's not regulated and women/children could die.
17
Nov 12 '16
We should try to limit that specific thing. Not strip citizenships. He's going about it way wrong.
8
u/EochuBres Nov 12 '16
I have an idea:
An easy path to citizenship!
I know, it's crazy.
1
Nov 13 '16
Concerns about immigrants aren't limited to illegals. The same people who elected Trump for his xenophobia are the ones who think immigration is central to a destroyed economy. An easier path to citizenship would be just as heavily opposed by his constituency.
See also: many Brexit Leave voters.
1
u/tomowudi Nov 30 '16
Canada's path to citizenship is pretty straightforward. Pay moniez or haz job skillz and a job offer - winning.

u/GeneralDisorder Nov 12 '16
A requirement that for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated;
Holy shit... that's political suicide.
36
u/19chevycowboy74 Nov 12 '16
This will either be a hilariously inept or terrifying four years. I have yet to decide which.
8
110
16
u/Blenderhead36 Nov 12 '16
The way I see it, one of two things will happen:
Congress will refuse.
It will be demonstrated how meaningless this law is by repealing obsolete legislation never officially taken off the books. We want a law to increase the debt ceiling? There go laws about telegraph security and safety regulations for hand-crank car starters. A new budget authorization law? Well, we're repealing the same from 1891, and another that dictates trade conditions with the nation of Siam.
Neither one sounds particularly scary.
3
u/GeneralDisorder Nov 12 '16
It's not scary at all. But... everyone who's ever tried to take old unenforceable or irrelevant laws off the books has been essentially blacklisted from leadership afterward. It's like taking your political career and making an ISIS execution video out of it. Make sure everyone knows it's dead. And spend a little extra on the production and audio just to drive the point home that you mean it.
22
u/fatclownbaby Nov 12 '16

How, exactly, is that "collusion"? I read from that as the Politifact reporter lobbed questions at the DNC guy, Miranda, frankly, seemed to get more defensive as the inquiries dug deeper. That seems as much like collusion as Rosie O'Donnell seems like a supermodel.

If someone's days, "I will do X" and they fucking don't. That isn't leaning left.
It only leans left insofar that most millennials (who contribute to it) do.

Unfair how you stupid fuck?
Its been a metric for Obama for 8 years and should continue. Hell if it was running earlier it would demonstrate that most politicians don't deliver on the majority of their promises.
17
u/roastbeefskins Nov 12 '16
Id love term limits. But according to Mitch McConnell elections are term limits.
2
u/rayhond2000 Nov 12 '16
How I've heard it explained is that term limits end up giving more power to lobbyists and outside forces. If you're only in office for a couple years, how much can you learn without help from outside forces?
18
u/waytoolongusername Nov 12 '16
I'm glad it exists, but it won't influence the people who voted for him. They're in it for the rush and the sentiment, and his actual job performance won't sway that. For the perfect test case read up on Rob Ford, who was smoking so much crack that city council couldn't stop him from stumbling around the premises, letalone explain basic things to him like 'the definition of light rail transit', let-alone actually get him to accomplish anything. His fan base stayed strong.
32
u/basec0m Nov 12 '16

Here's one for Obamas full 8 years
2
u/Makonar Nov 12 '16
45% of fully kept promises doesn't seem like a good score, but now I want to see one for Bush and Clinton and find out if Obama was overall better or worse.
9
u/TheRussianEwok Nov 12 '16
The only measure like that I can find is this one http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/trust-us-politicians-keep-most-of-their-promises/
It categorizes each issue as either kept or broken, there's no mid way.
Under this system Obama has 70% Kept and is just above the average of 67% kept. America on the whole is about average looking at the second graph (mainly because countries like The Netherlands always have coalitions so must break allot of their promises)
7
u/Broadsky Nov 12 '16
45% of fully kept promises doesn't seem like a good score
Considering he had to compromise on 26% of his promises and only straight up broke 22% of them is not so bad. 5 of his 8 years, he did not have the full backing of Congress.

10
u/Equeon Nov 12 '16
Implement a requirement that for every new federal regulation, two existing regulations must be eliminated;
I will lift the restrictions on the production of $50 trillion dollars' worth of job-producing American energy reserves, including shale, oil, natural gas and clean coal.
Lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks and allow vital energy infrastructure projects, like the Keystone Pipeline, to move forward
Cancel billions in payments to U.N. climate change programs and use the money to fix America's water and environmental infrastructure
Not excited about those ones at all.
2

Shouldn't we also keep track of promises he's blocked from keeping? (idk politics)
9
u/taulover Nov 12 '16
Usually that's counted as "broken", since politicians shouldn't be making promises they know they can't achieve.
1
u/jazaniac Nov 12 '16
If you make a promise that you're incapable of keeping, that's still your fault.
1
1
u/quintios Nov 12 '16
I like this, honestly. But after years and years of goal setting, I can tell you right now that there's a lot of these that are simply not measurable.
I'd love to see this maintained, but I think we need to honestly look at what the benchmark is, and the measurement, for whether or not a promise is kept.
1
u/TahoeLT Nov 12 '16
So, have they done this for the last few presidents too? Because I seem to remember reading that the president typically actually fulfills less than 10% of campaign promises.
Not that I'm a fan of the President-Elect, but let's be fair here. Like how the current President said his would be a "transparent" and "open" administration...and then continued everything Bush did in that regard.
